More than just plants

Those who make regular trips to Seeds & Sunshine have numerous reasons for doing so. They include tasty vegan food, generous portions (now you can order half-portions), the warm hospitality of the couple that owns the cafe and the relaxed, homely vibe there.

Hidden in Park Avenue on Sukhumvit 63, Seeds & Sunshine has been doling out dishes containing no animal products since early 2019. They go well beyond quinoa burgers and grainy salads. Malaysian native Quah Boon Kheng and Brit Stephanie Lilly run the plant-based cafe, hoping for it to become a place for like-minded individuals. The cafe is more like a community space and not just a destination for wholesome vegan food. It regularly hosts workshops and pop-up events that revolve around holistic well-being.

A newly-launched "collaborative lunch and dinner event" takes place once a month and is intended to be a platform for plant-based vendors to showcase their products through a carefully curated course menu, with help from home cook Anjana Ratanakovit.

The theme changes monthly and the last one was "Cruise Through The Mediterranean", featuring five courses, with each one highlighting a vegan product from a local vendor.

Fizzy pomegranate kombucha was followed by a roasted heirloom tomato salad, which was paired with soft vegan cheese from Barefood Bangkok and fresh herbs. The Moroccan vegetable tagine was clean-tasting and light. It was served with a substantial slice of gluten-free rosemary focaccia from Wild Grain Bakery. Though the bread was slightly tough, it was well flavoured and possessed a sweet, pleasant smell.

To energise the palate before the main course, was a bowl of cooling cucumber and basil gazpacho, which was thickened with yoghurt from Saptha. The main course was an impressive stuffed cannelloni. The pasta tubes were filled with a mixture of sautéed aubergines, courgettes and mushrooms, and dressed in a vegan pesto from Probiness. Interestingly, the pesto was made using unlikely ingredients such as, a fermented legume mixture, probiotic rasayana and ground peanuts, which explained the extra nuttiness and coarse texture.

An absolute favourite of mine was the dessert; Turkish kisses. It featured lokma (deep-fried leavened sweet dough that is soaked in light rose syrup) served on a pool of roasted almond butter (from Butter Me Up), alongside Beyond Pop's pistachio ice cream -- a trio of tasty treats to end a delightful meal.

Whether you are a vegan looking for a place with a great tasting menu or a meat eater who is curious about the other side, Seeds & Sunshine will have something for you. Visit the cafe's FB page to find out when their next event is taking place.
