Drop By Dough and stay put

SOCIAL & LIFESTYLE

While doughnuts aren't rare in Bangkok, they can be hit-or-miss. Some might be too sweet that even one doughnut puts you in a sugar coma while others are just laden with artificial flavouring. You sometimes also get doughnuts made with unsatisfying dough. However, Drop By Dough dashes all of those to bits and entices customers to enter their quaint Scandinavian-designed shop, settle in and dig into what perhaps is one of the best doughnuts in the city.

The owners of Drop By Dough travelled around the world visiting different doughnut shops and were inspired to open up their own here. They have two shops, one in Ari and the other in Sukhumvit 101/2, which I visited. This branch brims with Scandinavian simplicity with soothing colours and a vibe that makes you want to just sit back and relax. The shop, which also sells coffee, is tempting you to spend hours on end in it either working, studying or reading.

Their Classic vanilla (B120) translates the shop's simple yet elegant design into doughnut form: the top is dusted with icing sugar and the insides are filled with a vanilla cream that's not overly sweet. Crème brûlée (B120) is with the same filling but with a lightly burnt sugar glazing atop to give it a satisfying crunch. For choco-holics, the Nutella & hazelnut (B120) will do no wrong with its Nutella-glazed top sprinkled with almonds, which tricks you into thinking you're eating the doughnut version of a Ferrero Rocher. For something tropical, the Young coconut (B120) is topped with coconut shavings and filled with coconut milk. If you want something fruity, look no further than the Berry rose (B120), which gives you an explosion of berry in your mouth.

Drop By Dough's coffee packs flavour. The Black lemon coffee (B150) is great if you prefer zest and a good amount of citrus in your sip. The lemon flavour is prominent yet not too overpowering that you think you're drinking lemon juice. You can also go for the Coconut coffee (B150), a refreshing cuppa that gives you a tropical twist, thanks to coconut shavings in it. You can also opt for something non-caffeinated like their Iced chocolate (B130). The best part about their coffees is that they taste good without added sweeteners.

Drop By Dough's branch in Sukhumvit 101/2 is a great place to chill or get some work done with a cup of coffee in hand and a doughnut on standby. Be warned though: the doughnuts are addictive and you may not be aware that you had already scarfed down five of their Classic vanilla. Then again, that could be viewed as a good thing.
