Wacoal is continuing its successful eco-friendly project, "Wacoal Bra Day", which helps women dispose of lingerie properly with an aim to alleviate the waste crisis in the country.

It is marking its 10th anniversary with the motto "We Want Your Old Bras" to raise awareness about global warming and waste management problems among Thais. Initiated in 2012, this project has disposed of 462,102 old bras or 51 tonnes of waste, helping substitute 64 tonnes of coal-fired energy, reducing energy consumption and lowering carbon dioxide by planting more than 8,929 trees.

"The Wacoal Bra Day project operates under the concept of Zero Waste by minimising the amount of waste disposal to zero or no residual waste. The slogan 'We Want Your Old Bras' is meant to inspire people to be more environmentally conscious or eco-friendly," said Thamarat Chokwatana, executive director and marketing director of Thai Wacoal.

"All Thai people can help reduce the impact of global warming and PM2.5 pollution by separating waste or objects that are not used to be properly disposed of with the zero-waste method."

Bras are mostly made of polymer to provide durability and flexibility. One bra takes more than 400 years to decompose. The project accepts donations of any bra brand which are then sent into a proper disintegration process. All bras are incinerated at 1,800C in conjunction with cement production to reduce pollution.

"In addition to being used as a substitute for coal in cement production, the removal of old bras by using the closed burning system method does not generate ash, toxic dust pollution, PM2.5, or harmful carbon dioxide. It also helps to reduce the amount of residual waste from landfills," Thamarat said.
