Bangkok Trading Post Bistro & Bar looks to help Bangkokians cope with lockdown blues

A family dinner table during this pessimistic lockdown is among the most equitable arenas to appraise whether the food is honestly good.

There are no frills and no enhanced surroundings, and you are very likely to eat with the same dining companions, if any, every time.

For me, as a diner and not a food reviewer, the monotony is often there. So is my objection about the necessity of the meal. After all, eating can be exhausting, especially when you have to set up the table and clean up afterwards.

With that being said, I'm excited to say that my recent takeaway orders from Bangkok Trading Post Bistro & Bar in Sukhumvit 39 gave me a true gastronomic joy.

The meal, comprising six comforting dishes and no extravagance, was agreed by my family of three as one of the most satisfactory takeouts we've had this year.

The beef burger with coleslaw, fried potato wedges and garlic mayo.

Located on the ground floor of 137 Pillars Suites & Residences, Bangkok Trading Post Bistro & Bar is an all-day dining restaurant that doubles as a deli. It serves up an international variety of breakfast, salads, sandwiches, pasta, pizzas, main dishes, desserts and drinks.

Takeaway and delivery service can be placed directly at the restaurant or through food delivery apps including Robinhood, Grab and Line Man. The menu is available online at bangkoktradingpost.com.

From the large menu, expect to find the likes of waffles and pancakes; eggs Benedict Florentine with salmon; octopus and baby kale with roasted pumpkin salad; Hong Kong-style rice congee; avocado hummus and nuts with pita bread; truffled macaroni and cheese; pad Thai noodles; fish and chips; and beef and seafood steaks. Plant-based options are also available.

Crispy pork rice bowl and tuna tataki salad.

I decided to pick up my meal rather than have it delivered because the restaurant is pretty close to my house. The food was neatly packed in two large paper bags and ready for pick up upon my arrival.

The order included tuna tataki salad (360 baht); beef burger with smoked bacon, melted cheddar in beetroot bun (480 baht); deep-fried calamari (280 baht); garlic and chilli black angel hair pasta with shrimp (390 baht); two-faced pizza (420 baht); and a rice bowl with crispy pork belly wok-tossed with chilli, salt and garlic and served with onsen egg (290 baht).

Actually I would not have ordered the tuna tataki salad if it wasn't for its claim as the restaurant's best seller. And, let me tell you, it deserves to be so for all the reasons.

Five thick slices of fresh raw tuna, flash-charred and crusted with sesame seeds on the outside, came on a bed of mixed greens and legumes, including lettuce, spinach, sawtooth coriander, shallot, cherry tomatoes, bell pepper, chickpeas, red beans, edamame green peas, raisins and quinoa.

Such a combination seemed like an undesigned jumble at first. But when you eat it you can feel the smart culinary consideration of its creator. Every element, when smothered with the dressing, which proved delicious, very well complemented one another in terms of taste, texture and fragrance. All together: a dish truly worth having.

The Bistro's burger exhibited through its delivery box a mouth-watering chargrill aroma. It's a scrumptious stack of juicy beef patty, smoked Canadian bacon, white cheddar cheese, lettuce, tomatoes and pickles. The flavoursome bun, despite its, for me, nonsensical red hue, proved soft and not dry nor damp. Accompanying the burger were a small cup of house-made coleslaw and fried potato wedges with garlic mayo.

There's a perfect crunchy rendition of deep-fried calamari that was prepared with dry batter as a good calamari should be. The dish came with a creamy aioli that had a kaffir lime zest to it.

Bomboloni doughnuts.

Another most popular dish, squid-ink pasta with prawn, showcases perfectly-cooked spaghetti tossed with prawns, garlic, red chilli pepper, Italian basil and a generous helping of ikura salmon roe. The prawns were so fresh and firm -- you can tell by a popping sound when biting on them.

The rice dish with crispy pork was also very impressive. The pork boasted a perfect proportion of tender meat and crusty skin. It came thoroughly daubed with an addictive mixture of wok-fried garlic, chillies and salt.

You can combine two topping options on your pizza at the price of the higher value choice. My order was a marriage between the bistro's super popular Lanna pizza and a classic prosciutto pizza.

The first features northern Thai spicy sai oua sausage and a fiery spread of nam phrik ong chilli relish. The pizza was lent a mild balance from the second topping option through mozzarella cheese, Italian cured ham and wild rocket leaves.

Sweet treats on offer are such as banoffee pie, crème brûlée, croissants, muffins and recently-launched bomboloni doughnuts.
