Help at your fingertips

While some countries have seen early signs of bouncing back after the pandemic, in Thailand we're in the opposite situation with the number of new cases crossing the 10,000 mark daily (at the time of going to print). With the announcement of the latest restrictions, 13 provinces will be under lockdown until Aug 2 with tougher measures and a strict curfew in place. Don't feel depressed if you're bored, stuck and uninspired during these trying times, but do not let those feelings engulf you. Here are online tools with unique features that will make your life easier while being at home.

Pok Pok App

Available on App Store and Google Play Store

How often do you crave for Yaowarat's favourite dishes but have to curb it because you live in the suburbs? Despite the plethora of food delivery apps awaiting your order, Pok Pok, a new online food truck service, offers something different. Pok Pok brings recommended dishes from famous streetfood districts of Bangkok, such as Talat Phlu, Yaowarat and Chokechai Si, fresh and hot to your location, or close enough.

The name is derived from the sound customers make while knocking on the truck's shutters to order food. This platform offers a food truck/delivery service adapted from the pick-up trucks that sell fresh produce, which drive through neighbourhoods. Customers can order via the app, though you need to check if you're near or on their delivery route. Advance ordering can be done. The menu and routes change on a daily basis while the app allows users to track the location of trucks in real-time and check on the day's specialties.

Klinnangsue.co (Smell of Books)

Klinnangsue.co

The one thing the lockdown may have encouraged us to do is finishing a stack of unread books sitting on a shelf since god knows when. While e-books are more convenient, nothing can beat the actual touch of paper, right? If you're an old-school bookworm but stuck at home, try book borrowing service from Klinnangsue, where they will deliver to your doorstep. They are an online book community with two main highlights: a bibliotheca and a book store. Readers can expect a wide range of publications, from Thai to Thai versions of novels by famous local and award-winning international authors, to borrow for free! A delivery fee of B40 per time is applied and books can be borrowed for up to three books per month, which will be delivered on the second and fourth Monday of the month.

The book store, on the other hand, has listed classic to best-sellers for online purchase with a delivery cost of B30 for standard delivery or B50 for EMS. They've also got a little gimmick titled "Blind Date With A Book", which allows customers to order books wrapped in brown paper with a few keywords to indicate what kind of surprise the readers might be in for. It can be a fun way to discover something new or read outside your comfort zone.

Sati App

Available on App Store and Google Play Store

Keeping your problems to yourself doesn't make you self-sufficient: It may backfire and take an emotional toll. You may hide your problems or you might not have anyone to talk to. Either way, give the Sati (mindfulness in Thai) app a try. It's an on-demand listening platform, whereas it's a safe space that lets people vent their stress or sadness out without being judged. The app allows users to record their issues and send them to available listeners/volunteers, who have been certified by the Department of Mental Health. They then will evaluate user's mental health and give advice. The conversations remain anonymous for safety and privacy reasons.
