Harnessing the Sun
Thai-American designer Angelys Balek's new autumn/winter collection takes inspiration from the symbol of new beginnings
Two years ago Thai-American designer Angelys Balek was ebulliently "Above The Sun" -- the title of her autumn/winter collection. Approaching the cool season, her luxury swimwear brand AB. Angelys Balek once again salutes the luminous celestial body.
Amid the pandemic, optimism is conveyed in the "Here Comes The Sun" collection for autumn/winter 2021.
"The Sun is not just the origin of light and warmth but it is also emblematic of new beginnings and a brighter, happier future that tomorrow brings," said Angelys, who is based in Phuket.
New York is her second home as she studied at the Fashion Institute of Technology and launched her ready-to-wear collection at Fashion Week in 2012.
Angelys previously studied fashion and shoe design at the London College of Fashion in the UK after graduating from Bangkok University's Faculty of Fine Arts.
Since 2017, her eponymous label has focused on swimwear inspired by her childhood in Phuket and various disciplines such as art and architecture.
The name of the new collection recalls The Beatles' 1969 hit Here Comes The Sun, written by George Harrison. Relevant to the health crisis, the song inspires hope in reaching the light at the end of the tunnel.
"The Sun is an inspiration for the new collection and we believe that each and every woman has the self-power and confidence to go through challenging times," said the creative director.
Colourful prints are inspired by Gustav Klimt's paintings from the early 20th century. The primary subject of his works was the female body, which relates very well to her swimwear designs based on an understanding of women's figures.
Adele Bloch-Bauer I, The Kiss and The Maiden are among the masterpieces by the Austrian symbolist painter.
"Gustav Klimt was a painter of beautiful women," she said. "My aspiration is to design what women will wear, feel beautiful and happy in her own way."
Balek worked on three themes for the new season's swimwear and beachwear.
The Life Aquatic pieces boast prints inspired by Klimt's use of geometric shapes and vivid colours while A Gleam Of Sunshine designs are emblazoned with a mix of geometric and floral patterns.
Lastly, cool tones such as purple-blue and vivid prints characterise the Serene By The Sea pieces.
The new collection ranges from ruffle neck and denim peplum swimsuits to string bikinis and a deep V-neck kaftan with bold prints for a sunny winter wardrobe.
