A journey to Colombia’s flora
The Embassy of Colombia in Thailand is organising an exhibition titled “Floribus: A Journey to Colombia´s flora” by Colombian photographer Mónika Herrán. The exhibition which wraps on Friday is now on view at the Bangkok Art and Culture Centre (BACC).
The exhibition, which includes a selection of 22 digital colour photographs, is part of a larger collection of images, which attest to Herrán´s fascination with the rich flora and fauna of her hometown city, Cali, located in a valley with tropical weather and surrounded by the Andes mountains. Herrán, besides capturing the universe that lives within a flower, exalts the existence of plants as sources of creativity in the fields of art, literature, music and in her case: photography.
“Almost 32 years ago, while visiting the Palace of Adrian in ancient Carthage, in Tunisia, I picked up a poppy and placed it within the pages of a book I was carrying. Around the middle of 2019, I found it pressed inside that book, and ran it through a scanner trying to preserve its image before disintegrating. I then carefully, started to experiment how it changed with different types of lightning as a digital image,” said Herrán.
“Floribus is the result of this unexpected encounter and a work in progress, as my flower collection continues to expand. It is also a tribute to the immense scientific and artistic work developed by Alexander von Humboldt and Aimé Bonpland in Colombia, at the beginning of the 19th century,” she added.
This exhibition is part of the Embassy of Colombia´s objectives to continue stimulating a cultural dialogue between Colombia and Thailand.
