Royal Osha celebrates CNY by recalling traditions

SOCIAL & LIFESTYLE

For Chinese descendants, there are certain delicacies that are traditionally associated with the Chinese New Year celebration.

Other than fish, poultry and noodles, desserts are also quintessential to the tradition as they suggest a sweet life and set forth for prosperity.

This year, Royal Osha restaurant led by Michelin-starred Thai cuisine chef Vichit Mukura has come up with a signature series of Chinese New Year sweet treats that marry ancient rituals with present-day flair.

A unification between classic Thai confections, contemporary techniques and Chinese New Year inspiration, the Chinese New Year series features eight sweet goodies of different appearances, textures and auspicious meanings.

Of the set, khanom pui fai (Thai cotton wool cake) signifies flourishing. A duo of khanom bua hima (snow-lotus cake filled with custard) and khanom thua daeng mongkhon (fresh red bean cake) signifies affluence and unity within the family. Chinese plum-shaped look choop (Thai mung bean cake) represents longevity while orange-shaped look choop is believed to bring wealth and success. Red fortune cookies, prepared according to a classic Thai thong muan (crispy coconut roll) recipe, symbolise good fortune.

There's also a Chinese sycee-like dainty prepared to a recipe of hin fon thong, a bygone Thai snack. Vichit's lustrous rendition of the treat made with toasted macadamia paste and fine gold leaf represents luxuriance and asset.

Sommanus, Thai coconut meringue cookies, another item in the auspicious set, are presented in the form of French macarons with a chocolate centre. The crunchiness mimics a firecracker sound believed to scare off evil and bad luck. A collection of Chinese kids cookies suggest family expansion and good health.

Royal Osha Chinese New Year confectionery comes in a premium gift box in a red bag. The price is 2,250 baht per set.

The restaurant is located at 99 Witthayu Road. For more information or to place an order, call 02-256 6555 and 085 489 0571 or Line: @royalosha
