Siam Society is holding a one-day trip for those interested in Muslim culture to visit four historical masjids (mosques) in Bangkok in a charming background of unique Islamic architecture, on May 28.

Since ancient times, there has been contact between the Malay state and the Sukhothai kingdom. Much was done through trade, which led to the development of a relationship between the two kingdoms.

Up until the Ayutthaya, Thon Buri and Rattanakosin periods, the Islamic religion and Muslims were active in shaping the history of the land of Siam.

When the Rattanakosin kingdom was inaugurated as the new capital, people were displaced and forcibly brought into settlements for reasons of population and labour.

At the same time, various Muslim communities moved into settlements with the Siamese along with other foreigners.

Muslims often live in communities scattered around the city, each with a unique way of life that paints a picture and establishes the unique identity of the community.

From the traditional way of life in a particular community, Muslims are now integrated into society -- making their living and continuing their way of life just as like all other Thai citizens we see today.

For the upcoming trip, participants will visit Masjid Chakraphong which dates back to King Rama I's reign; Masjid Bang Ao, renowned for its unique design and architecture; Masjid Tonson, one of the oldest mosques in Thailand; and Masjid Bangluang, a historic mosque within the Kudi Khao community by Klong Bangkok Yai (formerly Klong Bang Luang).

The trip will conclude with a visit to the First Presbyterian Church in Samre subdistrict which was awarded for conservation by the Association of Siamese Architects under Royal Patronage. The fee is 3,300 baht (2,800 baht for members) including lunch.
