Surf’s up in Phrom Phong

Ever feel jealous of a hot surfer’s body? To get those strong legs, fab abs and lean build, there’s a novel way to work that physique without paddling out to sea. Surfset Fitness is a surf-inspired boutique gym that lets you “ride the waves”, but just in Phrom Phong.

The fitness regime originates from the States in 2011, the brainchild of hockey pro and surfing fanatic Mike Hartwick. He designed a surfboard-like training machine to mimic the total-body workout similar to what you get from the real thing, and opened Surfset Fitness. The indoor fitness studio allows anyone to get a sexy surfer bod and catch some swells all-year round.

Just landed in Thailand, the first Surfset studio has started to make waves as it attracts Bangkok’s in-the-know exercisers to get on board. Surfset Thailand provides special boards and can accommodate up to 15 participants in each session, in a friendly environment.

Working out on the surfboard for the first time is not as easy as it looks. But once you can get up on your feet and find your balance, it’s all about the fun that is worth the sweat. There are four options of training classes for different fitness levels: Balance, Burn, Build and Blend, led by bilingual and English-speaking instructors. A single one-hour class apparently burns 400 to 900 calories.

As the Surfset full-body workout is a demanding physical challenge, the benefits are almost like what a wave rider gets. It combines actual surf moves like shark kicks, duck dives and pop-ups with cardiovascular exercise, yoga poses and core training. We found the exercise on pumping waves is a fun new way to burn calories and beat gym boredom. For us, one hour wasn’t enough.

A single class is priced 700 baht and multi-class packs start from 3,780 baht.

Surfset Thailand is located on the top floor of Kai Yang Sua Yai at Piman 49, Sukhumvit 49. Visit www.surfsetthailand.com or call 02-662-4566 or 095-594-9696 for weekly class schedule.
