Đồng Xuân Market

Established in 1889, on the northern edge of the Old Quarter, this renowned four-storey building is home to Hanoi’s largest indoor market. There’s so much to see, with hundreds of shops selling everything from traditional clothing to household appliances. A wet market section on the ground floor is where locals head for their weekly meat, seafood, fruit and vegetables, and it’s a fun place for foodies to learn more about the diversity of delicious local ingredients.

Opening hours: Monday to Thursday, 7am to 6pm; Friday, Saturday and Sunday, 7am to midnight.

Quảng Bá Flower Market

If you love being out and about at night, or are too excited to go to sleep, do head on over to this charming flower market featuring a beautiful array of the brightest blooms. Exotic orchids, roses, lilies and many more floral species create a spectacle of colour for all to enjoy. About 7km (or a 25-minute drive) north of the Old Quarter, in Hanoi’s West Lake district, this evocative market is well worth the trip.

Opening hours: Every day; recommended between 2am and 4am.

Hanoi Night Market

Located in the Old Quarter, this 3km meandering market starts at Hàng Đào street and runs to the north edge of Đồng Xuân market. A great place to soak up Hanoi’s night market vibe, night owls can browse the many local handicraft and backpacker stalls that line this popular pedestrianised route. Steaming bowls of phở (noodle soup) provide an ideal snack, and the Saturday night traditional live opera and music performances come highly recommended.

Opening hours: Friday, Saturday and Sunday, 8pm ‘til late.

Tạ Hiện

This small street in the Old Quarter of Hanoi only stretches 200m but is one of the most crowded nightlife hubs in the city, attracting locals and international visitors alike. Here, you can sample a selection of authentic snacks, such as nem chua rán (deep fried cured sausage) and chim cút nướng (roasted quail), accompanied by a local beer, or soft drink. “Một, hai, ba…dzô!” (one, two, three…cheers!)

Opening hours: Every day; recommended at weekends, 6pm to 1am.

Bến Thành Market

This iconic emblem and principle landmark of the city is situated opposite the Saigon bus station; from here you can take a bus directly to the airport. Featuring 3,000 stalls that attract 15,000 customers a day, this market offers plenty of choice for those on a shopping spree. From traditional Vietnamese áo dài dresses and nón lá hats, to tasty regional dishes such as cơm ga (chicken rice) and bánh xèo (sizzling pancake), welcome to the heart of market culture in Ho Chi Minh City.

Opening hours: Every day, 6am to midnight.

Binh Tay Market

Located in the centre of Ho Chi Minh City’s Chinatown district, this interesting, down-to-earth market provides for locals and international visitors seeking a variety of wholesale goods. Lacquerware, textiles and craft materials can be bought in bulk, which makes this the perfect stop for small business owners and importers of foreign products.

Opening hours: Every day, 8am to 5pm.

Soái Kình Lâm Fabric Market

Also located in Chinatown, this wholesale market is renowned for the quantity – and quality – of its Asian-sourced textiles. Silk, cotton, wool, velvet; all are available to purchase in a range of exciting colours. And with such low prices, bargain hunters will definitely want to pop in and take a look.

Opening hours: Every day, 8am to 6pm.

Bến Thành Street Food Market

This open-air street food marketplace is situated behind Bến Thành Market and offers around 20 different street food options. The ideal lunch or dinner spot, this is a popular meeting place for tourists seeking a taste of reliable, authentic street cuisine. In the evenings, stick around to watch the street acts entertain passers-by with ad hoc comedy and musical entertainment.

Opening hours: Every day, 10am to 11pm.

Phạm Ngũ Lão and Bùi Viện

Located on the Western edge of District 1, this busy area is very popular with backpackers and budget travellers. Hostels and guesthouses, Western-style restaurants, coffee shops and bars line the streets and alleyways that make up this lively part of the city. A great place to experience the city’s nightlife, friendly locals and expats will often strike up conversation, happy to share their travel tips and stories.

Opening hours: Every day.
