ARTS & ENTERTAINMENT

Feast your eyes on some great contemporary Japanese design next week at the Thailand Creative and Design Centre (TCDC) Bangkok.

Japanese Design Today 100 begins next week at TCDC Bangkok.

Starting on April 24, the Japan Foundation, Bangkok, will collaborate with the TCDC Bangkok, TCDC Chiang Mai, TCDC Khon Kaen, and the Faculty of Fine and Applied Arts Gallery, Khon Kaen University, to organise the travelling exhibition "Japanese Design Today 100" from April until July in three provinces in Thailand.

Japanese Design Today 100 features 100 examples of Japanese design that focus on products found in daily life. Classic and modern, minimal and cute, the products being showcased range from post-war designs such as a Nikon F camera and Toshiba's electric rice cooker to more modern designs of handycams and touchpads.

These designs can be dated from the 1950s until after 2010. The products are divided into 10 categories: classic Japanese design, furniture and housewares, tableware and cookware, apparel and accessories, children, stationery, hobbies, healthcare, disaster relief, and transportation.

The exhibition is curated by design critic and art professor Hiroshi Kashiwagi, curator Masafumi Fukagawa, design director Shu Hagiwara, and journalist Noriko Kawakami. It was initially organised in 2004 before being renewed in 2014. In Thailand, it will be open to the public free of charge starting next week at TCDC Bangkok, before making its way to TCDC Chiang Mai and Khon Kaen University.

Prior to the exhibition in Bangkok, the Creative Economy Agency and Japan Foundation will host an accompanying seminar, "The Matter Of Things: So Products Design Our Life?" to share in contemporary design ideas from a new generation of academics and designers. Speakers include Asst Prof Patave Arrayapharnon, packaging design instructor at Faculty of Decorative Arts, Silpakorn University, who will discuss the topic of contemporary and functional design, and Tanith Vachiraprakanskul, founder of the paper design MOHo Studio, who will discuss the art of paper folding and design.

The talk will be held on April 23, 3-5pm, at Material & Design Innovation Center, TCDC Bangkok. Limited seats are available. Register at zipeventapp.com/e/Japandesign100talk.
