New plastic surgery innovation unveiled

A Thai aesthetic plastic surgery specialist invented an innovation of lip reduction technique called 'Seagull Wing Incision'.

Apart from the eye and nose plastic surgery, lip reduction surgery is becoming more popular, especially in Asia. According to the data collected by American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), in 2016, there were 3,547 lip reduction surgeries in the US, representing 283% increase from 2015. On Instagram alone there are more than 10,000 posts tagged #lipreduction #lipreductionsurgery, confirming the craze on lip transformation, especially in Asian countries.

However, what is becoming more interesting in the international plastic surgery is the innovation of lip reduction technique called 'Seagull Wing Incision' invented by a Thai cosmetic plastic surgeon, Pusit Jittilaongwong, M.D., General Surgery, Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, and founder of Punisa Clinic. And, this technique is to be unveiled for the first time before international plastic surgeons at the IMCAS World Congress 2018 – Aesthetic & Plastic Surgery, in Paris this February.

What is 'Seagull Wing Incision'?

"The Seagull Wing Incision is a specific technique and design that I invented to bring the best result of lip reduction surgery, both for aesthetic purposes and abnormality correction," revealed Dr. Pusit, also known as 'Dr. Thin Lips'. "This technique is different from the traditional method adopted in Europe for years. The conventional lip reduction involves cutting off some amount of flesh to make thinner lips, but the shape does not look so nice. But the Seagull Wing technique is used to create organic, seagull-wing-like shape of upper lip, making more natural, and most importantly, making it functional as usual. This technique also boasts short-time recovery, no bruise, less keloid on lips or other side-effects after the surgery.

Apart from aesthetic purpose, this technique is also useful for correcting congenital abnormalities, for example, harelip and cleft palate, bringing more natural look, and of course, patient's confidence."

Surgery procedures – Before and After

"Before any surgery, patients must pass the lip-analytical procedures to analyse facial and lip structure and assess possibility of aesthetic result of a particular patient. In this procedure, international references on lip plastic surgery will be adopted to bring as much effectiveness as possible.

It must be admitted that not everyone gets better results due to congenital characteristics of lips. I will inform them the possible percentage and let them decide whether they will do it or not.  This is the most important process that I encourage every patient to do before they decide to do lip reduction anywhere else.

The lip reduction surgery usually takes between 15 and 30 minutes per lip, depending on the amount of tissue to be removed — and the stitches remain in place for one week, after which they dissolve or are removed manually.

Who can and who cannot do the lip reduction surgery?

"There are some cases I do not recommend to do lip reduction surgery," explained Dr.Pusit.

Please check out these cautions before your decision.

1. It is not recommended for patients aged over 45 years because their lip corners start dropping naturally, making it hard to get the required shape.

2. If you have dental problem, for instance, big gap between teeth (Diastema), teeth stick out, anterior cross bite. It is recommended to visit dentist or orthodontist to get the teeth fix and get it done first.

3. Lip Surgery is not advised for patients with braces who have teeth not all right tighten yet.

4. Lip Surgery is not recommended for patients who show too much gum tissue when smiling.

5. Lip Surgery is not recommended for patients who have very thin lips. Basically, some 10-30 % of the tissue will be removed in the surgery. If the existing tissue is too thin, it may cause over- reduction.

6. Patients who have an asymmetrical lip, asymmetric smile, uneven cupid's bow.

7. Patients who have known risk factors for developing keloids should avoid lip surgery. Those with darkly pigmented skin are more prone to keloids.

Do a smart study and make a right decision

"Although we have highly-developed innovations, the most important thing to be considered is expertise and experience of surgeons. Nowadays, we often heard news about inappropriate surgery by inexperienced or uncertified practitioners that led to undesirable effects, and in some cases, death," said Dr. Pusit.

"Therefore, before jumping into the surgery, make sure that the practitioner and clinic are trustworthy. The easiest way I suggest is to search for the practitioners' names on the Medical Council of Thailand's website 'www.tmc.or.th/check_md/' to check if they are really a specialist with degrees in plastic cosmetic surgery. If they are not certified with the Doctor of Medicine degrees in plastic cosmetic surgery, you should avoid them because their expertise is completely different."
