Official description

As a kind of Christmas present to everyone in need of a little respite and a fresh perspective during the festive season, the Centara Grand at CentralWorld flagship branch of the burgeoning SPA Cenvaree brand, has created a new "Spa Pick & Mix Package" that's almost too good to be true.

Not many five-star spas offer their finest treatments for effectively B1,000/hour_less if you take advantage of the steam, sauna, plunge bath and rainshower options in the locker rooms and even the infinity-edge pool and first-rate fitness facility with fabulous views.

The package combines two definitive spa treatments that impart exceptional pleasure and leave you both looking and feeling ready to party.

The blissful interlude starts with a 90-minute hot stone de-stress massage that segues seamlessly into a 60-minute Jurlique Deep Cleanse facial, the regular rate for which alone is B2,400++!

Or more accurately, it starts with a welcome cup of hot, fruity chrysanthemum tea, a cold towel and a bit of form filling in the sumptuous-serene reception area adjacent to the 26th floor elevator portal that serves the entire Lifestyles floor.

One is then led along a peaceful timber-clad corridor to the 'his' or 'hers' locker room to swap your day clothes for a robe and slippers and secure your personal effects. Obviously, if you want to avail yourself of any of the other facilities prior to your treatment, you will need to arrive that much earlier. Or why not save it till after for a concluding treat?

Once inside the pristine clean, soft tone, subtly stylish room, the journey proper begins with a neem footbath, an herbal infusion made from the ground leaves, flowers and bark of the neem tree which has been used in Southeast Asia as a healing plant for centuries. The feet are then gently scrubbed with a combination of neem tea, which is particularly effective as an anti-bacterial, and gently exfoliating and nourishing mineral salts.

And so to the spa bed, lying face down first. Basically, hot stone massage uses heated basalt stones, smoothed in river beds over aeons, to soothe and relax deep into the tissues, sinews, joints and even internal organs.

My therapist, Khun Mutt, with two years in the job a relative new-comer but clearly a gifted fast-learner, uses the heated basalt rocks, pre-treated with aromatic and softening essential oils, both as an extension of her own hands, moulding and kneading all along my meridians and chakras, and placing them on different parts of my body while massaging elsewhere before returning to retrieve them in a kind of game.

The heat is deeply relaxing, the warmth loosening up tight muscles, allowing K. Mutt to work more deeply and quickly.

Hot stones warmed by fire were reputedly first used by Native Americans to treat aching muscles. The technique requires exceptional skill and sensitivity on the part of the therapist. Too hot and the stones burn. Too cool and there's no benefit. The trick is to move them more quickly at their hottest and slow things down and leave them lying as they cool closer to body temperature. This K. Mutt achieved perfectly; the initial heat enlivening in streaks left at high speed, becoming as comforting as a water bottle in a winter bed within a minute or two, with the weight of the stone inspiring a total stillness with a meditative edge to it that was uncannily relaxing.

The oils used add another dimension to the enjoyment. SpaCenvaree offers a choice four bespoke oils. I selected muscle ache relief massage oil, a rich blend of essential oils with muscle relaxing and blood activating properties that relieve aching and tired muscles. It also seemed to work wonders for my sinuses.

The ensuing Jurlique Deep Cleanse treatment was just as enjoyable though concentrated on the face. This was in accordance with the Jurlique philosophy of relaxing the mind while nourishing the skin with pure botanical based lotions and potions.

Here K. Mutt's specialist training came to the fore as the sequence is nothing if not complex. The format includes cleansing, exfoliation and steaming coupled with a cleansing mask to expel impurities and excess oil. A relaxing hand massage follows using magnolia and rose lotion mixed with rosehip oils and vitamin E, known for its intensive conditioning. With my pores thus utterly unclogged my facial skin tone was ready for the red carpet, even if the red carpet was not ready for me!

The treatment concluded with K. Mutt banishing any last vestiges of residual stress, especially concentrating her stress-reducing neck, shoulder and back massage on the area I indicated on the welcome diagnostic form as requiring special attention, i.e. my lower back.

Bliss, basically. From the first chords of Bach through an inspiring succession of cinematic musical passages interspersed with evocative birdsong, the thoughtfully sequenced soundtrack further enhanced the experience.

After dressing again, I adjourned to the reception again for a cup of detoxifying ginger tea and a plate of fresh fruit. The moment I sat down a warm weighted pillow was placed on my neck, reinforcing the comforting feelings.

Spa Cenvaree bases its philosophy in age-old therapies yet is also technology driven, offering the latest hydro facilities, Vichy water rain shower therapy, infrared sauna, and science-based slimming technologies. All these complement traditional Thai Spa techniques that provide soothing and rejuvenating treatments. The spa offers 14 multi-function therapy rooms, couple treatment suites with Jacuzzi, a massage room and a Traditional Thai Massage room, as well as a trendy nail bar with IPOD facilities and an outdoor option.

Signature treatments include river stone massage, a menu of Asian and Western massage therapies, personalised slimming programs, scalp treatments, anti-aging facials, and four-element bath therapies. Especially recommended are 'Thai Harmony' (Signature Four Hands Massage); Hai Muea' (Village Rituals for Back Relief); 'The Queen of Plant Essence'(Signature Herbal Facial), and; 'Niran Nirvana' (Signature Couple Spa Journey).
