Official description

You may have been looking for an excuse to visit that swanky new hotel that opened a couple of months ago at the end of Thong Lor. Well, CHOW Café and Bar provides you with the perfect opportunity. Situated right next to the Metropole, the casual dining destination's warm wooden interior, high ceilings and open kitchen is so inviting you might not want to leave. As an establishment that aims to be open longer than it's closed, you can find yourself doing one of many things at CHOW, from eating a 4am breakfast, sipping Parisian cocktails late afternoon, to watching a late night movie on the big screen in its second larger dining area. The walls are decked with local contemporary art that's so edgy and eye-catching so it's just got everything going for it really.

THE MENU

The food is Chinese fusion, but the type you'd find in California, not Bangkok. You can find some Thai influences here though, obvs. We started off with some Chinese shrimp chips (B200) which we dipped in some sweet and sour sauce; we also had some Tofu chips (B150) which we dipped in some olive mayo dip that had a nice touch of tahini in it. Both chips had us wanting more. Next up was the highlight of our evening and maybe even week; American cuisine enthusiasts may appreciate this one: Pastrami egg rolls (B220). This is pure genius, it tastes like pizza in a spring roll but better than you'd imagine and the melted emmental cheese is just so heavenly when combined with the sambal sauce -- this find is almost up there with the Watermelon fried rice we found in Singapore last month at Ginkao restaurant! Gotta try it, guys!

We also tried the Potstickers (B200), which is really what Americans call medium sized gyoza and CHOW make them a lot richer -- with pork and leek stuffing -- than the usual Chinese fare you'll find anywhere else. The gyoza sauce -- CHOW's homemade -- had a bit of chilli in it and was a tad sweeter than usual which we really appreciated. The Kung pao chicken (B250) was stir-fried chicken with peanuts, chilli paste and veggies and we felt it was a bit too on the firey side. But, each to their own and CHOW serves it next to a bed of rice decorated with sesame seeds which we thought looked rather #pretty. And if you're gonna have Chinese, you've gotta have noodles. We had CHOW's speciality Lo-Mein ones, the Vegetarian (B200) which consisted of shitake, bell peppers, carrot, onion and bok choy and Sweet and sour pork (B200). Let's just say we felt like we were fulfilling that craving we always get when we watch our favourite Hollywood actors in those old movies order Chinese takeaway.

CHOW is all about its drinks too, with some Parisian mixologists who take their cocktails very, very seriously. You can choose to have your special house infused cocktails self-served from a large China bowl into small authentic china tea-cups, or, we totally loved The poux spritz (B250) -- a gin concoction fuses passion fruit and prosecco champagne and is served in a large copper coloured pineapple -- drinking it made us feel like a queen tbh and it tasted divine. The Canadian spring foam was another mind blower -- Green tea and a maple syrup base with black rum, fresh Thai oranges and milk.

INSIDER'S TIP

All the cocktails at CHOW are B250, a good B100 lower than the cheapest on Thong Lor at present (Uncle - 72 Courtyard) so quite frankly, we don't know what your're all waiting for. Also, anticipate a weekly movie night at CHOW as well as regular exhibits of local budding artists.

VALUE AND VERDICT

The food is great and also different to what Bangkok has to offer right now, especially those pastrami egg rolls, (gnom gnom gnom). Completely affordable and a lot cheaper than what's on offer at the moment in the area. The drinks will also get you pretty sloshed btw. It's an almost 24 hour venue -- where else could you technically get breakfast at 4am? The vibe is edgy but chilled at the same time. We're pretty in love with CHOW right now in case you were wondering. g
