Official description

72 Courtyard is a collection of bars and restaurants on Thonglor which long ago became a hotspot for late night chillouts. One of the bars is Savoy, which prides itself as being a punch bar with singing rooms. And really, punch and karaoke already sounds like a good combo for a night out with friends. Savoy's first floor houses its singing rooms, while the second is where the bar is and where patrons are welcome to chill inside or on the balcony. The décor gives off a contemporary renaissance feel. If the modern playlist that's playing in the background was replaced with jazz music, Savoy could easily pull off being a romantic bar to take your special someone to. But Savoy is definitely meant for a group hangout sesh. The singing rooms and their punch selections are evidence of that. And like they say, the more the merrier.

Savages on a voyage

The setting: 72 Courtyard is a collection of bars and restaurants on Thonglor which long ago became a hotspot for late night chillouts. The Menu

A quick Google search of the definition of "savoy" will give you this result: "a cabbage of a hardy variety with densely wrinkled leaves." Hilarious though it may be, the restaurant's name actually came from their concept of "Savages on a Voyage", a phrase which is featured prominently on their menu and coasters. They probably guessed their patrons would be party animals. The voyage they're referring has more to do with the 12 kinds of punch which are separated into five different "locations": Space, Sea, Wild, Mountain and Oasis. Drinks are aptly named to coincide with their "location", like Stormy Ride which is under Sea and Coco My Nuts which is under Wild (stop giggling). They can be served as individual drinks, but like we said, Savoy is all about hanging with a group, so we went ahead and tried two punchbowls (B1,400++ each) which can serve up to four people. Supernova is an absinthe-based punch which looks like a beautiful galaxy gray and is accentuated with pomegranate pulps. It's a bit strong and a great alternative would be Summit High, which tastes as if it's lemonade or tea with a hint of jasmine. Even though it's gin-based, we barely tasted the alcohol.

The food served at Savoy is actually a selection of dishes from the restaurants at 72 Courtyard, which means you're able to get the best of everything without having to hop from one place to another. Two dishes to start you off which go great with Savoy's signature punches are the Beef nacho cheese (B280++) and the Baramudi + shrimp crackers (B200). The Baramudi + shrimp crackers is very much a drinking snack that's a little reminiscent of larb. Meanwhile, the beef nacho cheese is your classic beef-riddled, cheese-slathered nachos that's both spicy and sweet and definitely best eaten while still hot.

Also available at Savoy is the Pork belly el pastor (B290). Succulent pork is served in soft tortilla shells that you wrap around so as to be able to bite into. Don't worry about spilling the contents because the soft tortillas do a fine job in keeping the pork in there. The meat is succulent and there's a bit of sweetness and freshness added to the taste, thanks to the small chunks of pineapple in there. The dish was great, but the only downside would have to be having only two per serving.

We were thrilled to find out that you're also able to order Mac and cheese (B260) at Savoy and we wasted no time trying it out. It throws you off when you first see it because it's cooked with orecchiette pasta. In the end, it actually made eating it easier since you just had to fork it up. The dish is served with gratinated cheese and small croutons that give it a crunchy contrast to its already natural creamy texture. It also had a surprising spicy kick that was just the right amount.

Ending Savoy's variety of dishes from 72 Courtyard and further giving proof of the wide array of dishes you could get is the Shrimp tempura roll (B260). The shrimp is fat and could actually be eaten without being dipped in soy sauce since it already has such a good flavour, but that's just our personal preference.

Savoy's drinks were conceptualised as a journey, but it's safe to say that after the variety of dishes we tried, the food took us on a journey as well.

INSIDER'S TIP

It would be a terrible mistake if we didn't mention Savoy's singing rooms, which are decked out with karaoke machines that have a huge library of songs. Unlike conventional karaoke places, you can use Savoy's singing rooms when you make a minimum purchase of food and drinks. The smallest room, which fits up to 10 people, can be rented out for an hour for a minimum purchase of B1,000. The price gets amped up during the weekends though. Food can also be delivered to the rooms, FYI. Since Savoy only has four singing rooms, it's advisable you give them a call and book a room in advance.

It's not surprising Savoy would be packed during weekends, but the crowd starts coming at around 9pm, so you can still get there early while there aren't many people around.

VALUE AND VERDICT

Savoy is definitely a place we'll add to our "night out with the gang" list, although it's not a place we can just go to on a whim. It's a little pricey, but because it's such a great place for a hangout sesh, we're willing to go back just to enjoy a night drinking and singing our hearts out with our buddies.
