The second volume of The Iron Faries' fairytale is upon us. We all know how much of an impact the first bar and restaurant had on Bangkok's nightlife; Thong Lor has never been the same. The Iron Fairies Dragonfly at Central Eastville is definitely going to be another game changer, methinks. It may seem far out but hey, there's more to Bangkok than Thong Lor.

All about that jazz and glitter

Fat Gut'z Burger.

The Set-Up

The second volume of The Iron Faries' fairytale is upon us. We all know how much of an impact the first bar and restaurant had on Bangkok's nightlife; Thong Lor has never been the same. The Iron Fairies Dragonfly at Central Eastville is definitely going to be another game changer, methinks. It may seem far out but hey, there's more to Bangkok than Thong Lor.

Deep within the Fat Gut'z saloon at Central Eastville, you'll find a hidden gate behind a book case, which you can only pass through if you have a dragonfly key. Going through the moss-covered entrance, you enter a completely different world, what appears to be an ancient enchanted chapel hidden deep within a magical forest.

Every chair and table is different, hand-carved especially for Dragonfly from aged oak with some of the chairs appearing like they just came from the altar of the Sistine Chapel. The walls are made of weathered bricks and concrete, some dotted with magic vials. Natural tree roots are scattered throughout and with dim lighting, guests can view the stage. On the night we visited, the Bowindi Quartet was playing some soul-striking ethno jazz numbers, led by Cameroonian drummer Didier Mpondo. Later on the stage was joined by the incredibly talented and voluptuous jazz singer Theara. Although Dragonfly is chiefly a jazz bar, expect late-night DJs on Fridays and Saturdays.

With heads adorned with beautiful white feathers, waitresses walk around looking like little fairies, eager to make your night as magical as can be.

The Menu

Dragonfly's menu has been created by the highly acclaimed Chef Pakavadee "Nokveedz" Seriwiwattana of Fat Gut'z Saloon Eastville and features her take on the classic burgers we all know and love from Iron Fairies. On the night we went, our palates were soulfully re-awakened with comfort food that went down a treat with the jazz. Binzy's Beef Burger (B360) comes straight from Iron Fairies, with the homemade beef patty dolloped with fat onion rings, cheesy cheddar and homemade spicy ketchup. No surprise this very burger made Bangkok's best burgers list two years ago.

Now Fat Gut'z burger (B420) is not to be missed. It features battered fish topped with bacon and spicy pork bolognaise, cheddar cheese, tomato, cucumber, rocket, tartar spread, ketchup and Dijon mustard. It comes split in two, with almost double everything. Ambitious eaters can combine theirs and try this beast of a burger whole, or those with more table etiquette can just slowly tuck in. Either way, you'll be heading to yummy town.

Salmon Crudo (B450) was my favourite; it tastes of new-age som tum, with fresh slices of salmon, shaved celery, poached winter-melon, chili, garlic and herb sauce. The original hot Buffalo wings (B180) were a tad sweet for my liking but the blue cheese dip and veggie sticks were a classy touch.

The drinks are just as taste-bud-blowing as Iron Fairies'. Smoke in the bottle No1 (B320) -- a crowd favourite from yours truly showcases blueberry infused vodka (with real blueberries -- so important), elderflower syrup, sage, cassis and oregano smoke. The smell of the oregano smoke lingers in the bottle that it's poured from and smells strangely like some other type of smoke some Bangkokians may know all too well.

Ladies will love the Watermelon Daiquiri (B280) which comes with a piece of cinnamon marshmallow and the Jasmine White Lady (B280), an ethereal looking drink that is mixed with Gin, Grand Marnier, lemon juice, jasmine and egg white. The smell of the jasmine is divine.

Inside Tip

The Iron Fairies Dragonfly is essentially going to be a members-only venue, with each member having their own sexy dragonfly key. However, don't be too bummed out if you haven't already been given one. There will be opportunities to buy them. Right now, there are 88 bottles of "Blue Fairies" limited edition Johnny Walker Blue label, each priced at B8,888. Buy one and you get a key. Also, if you do happen to rock up one night without a key, the staff may just let you in if it's you're lucky night.

If you do get in, make sure to have a little search for some glitter. Hidden in the sockets of the arms of some chairs you'll find some golden dust that you can sprinkle on your friends and loved ones. Ask the fairies to help you!

Value and verdict

It may seem exclusive, but if you can get into Dragonfly, do so. You will definitely have a night you won't forget. The combination of comfort food, soulful music and classy drinks will soothe you. And it's also something different from your bog-standard night out -- this one's definitely got more character. g
