Official description

Bangkokians seem to be very relaxed when it comes to interacting with animals. Here, it's OK to pet a dog in front of 7-Eleven, and it's OK to feed soi dogs scraps of food while eating at a roadside vendor. Perhaps this is why we embrace animal cafés of all kinds with open arms (and bags full of treats too).

To the best of our knowledge, The Animal Café is the second and latest exotic animal café in Bangkok, being more centrally located at La Raffles community mall. The two-part venue offers a café area with an adjoining owl room on the ground floor and a restaurant/playroom area with the other animals upstairs. The entry fee is B200 per person (B100 for child) which once purchased is used to buy food and drink inside.

The inside smells like a mix of wild animals and disinfectant but the scent isn't so strong that it turns you off. There's a good variety of adorable animals you can pet, including OMG-it's-so-soft chinchillas, big-eyed owls, agile fennec foxes and regal caracals. We came away with zero bites but regardless, we recommend you always be gentle when playing with them, making sure that staff are present too. On the more exotic side, there are cherry shrimps, colourful tiny crabs, Argentine horned frogs and a salamander to, uhm, watch. Oh and if you're a Harry Potter fan, there are full costumes you can put on to feel like a true Gryffindor in the owl room too.

The Animal Café offers you a respectable range of F&B. Served with fries and sautéed mushrooms, Beef burger (B320) is quite the stack of delights. We dug the thousand island dressing, fried bacon and crunchy onion rings, but the patty was a tad too thin for our liking. Dressed in a tasty mushroom sauce and served on a bed of fries, Rib eye steak (B450) was soiled a bit by uneven cooking, leaving certain parts of the meat too rough to chew. Other edible offerings include desserts, Italian sodas, coffees and smoothies. Perhaps the animals are the bigger attraction here.

Putting the issue of raising wild creatures in the city aside, the venue is an OK place to eat, relax and have fun with exotic creatures. Those who want selfies with animals or couples looking for a cute time together may want to give this place a try. g
