Official description

A healthy new diner has opened up inside Chidlom's blinding red community mall. Located on Mercury Ville's third floor, August Organic Eatery occupies a corner spot facing Ploenchit Road, which entitles it to a capacious dining space and stunning view of -- Central Chidlom. The entrance is a little cramped, covered in distracting credit card promotion signs during our visit, but past that, the atmosphere made it convincing to stay. White walls are tattooed with hand-painted murals of veggies and also accessorised with bronze-lettered statements. From high tables to plush blue sofas, the choices of seating are as bountiful as the eight month and accommodating enough for a bustling weekday's crowd.

The setting

The Menu

August Organic Eatery says it stresses organic cleanliness over clean eating. Confused? Let's review. Eating clean means doing whatever to your food to minimise calories and fat, and sometimes that boils down to -- pun intended -- tasteless meat and veggies. Organic merely signifies where the ingredients come from. The term won't have a fit if you double deep-fry wild-caught shrimp in IFOAM-certified olive oil.

Yet, tasting the dishes at August, we felt that they could easily qualify as clean as well. Everyone knows, for instance, that most commercial salads aren't the caloric lifesavers you'd wish them to be. So, we were mildly surprised that a restaurant that claims not to be clean dresses its Green garden salad (B195) with only the slightest spritz of balsamic vinaigrette. Evenly, if we may add. Your body will thank you for ordering this.

Organic quinoa salad with prawns (B250) is another health-freak bait at this phresh all-day diner. However, unlike quinoa salads anywhere else in the city, August puts a Thai flavoured spin on theirs, with kicks of garlic and prik kee nhoo. Yes, quinoa with Thai chilli pepper. Obviously stay away if you're spice-intolerant, but surprisingly this dish was not too intense for people with only a mild spice threshold.

If you're looking for more Thai-styled dishes in this health cafe, keep an eye out for the spaghetti. August Organic Eatery low-key capitalises on Thai-Italian fusion with picks like Spaghetti with larb mushroom (B195) and Spaghetti with nam phrik long ruea (B200). Personally, however, we were more excited for less endemic health platters like the Grilled sea bass steak with mashed purple yam (B280). Not only is it a looker of a lunch with its colours and stylish construction, it's one of those dishes where something amazing happens in your mouth when you put all the separate components -- tender pescetarian steak, spinach, sweet purple mash, tomato garnish and savoury sauce -- together in one bite.

With all the flavours this organic diner has to offer, it's nice to have a palate-cleansing refreshment, such as the Almond milk with butterfly pea and chia seeds (B89), on the side. This vegan drink comes in a memorable cloudy blue colour, which was honestly more intriguing than off-putting to us, knowing the blue comes naturally from butterfly pea. If you'd enjoy the natural taste of almond milk over sweet, sugary dairy drinks any day, this is definitely one to settle down with for a meal.

Insider's Tip

For full disclosure, not all the dishes at August will be 100% organic. Some are only partially organic and that's nothing to get worked up about if you're not regularly a stickler about organic groceries. However, if you do insist on organic perfection, there are for sure 11 dishes that are fully, from grain to salt, organic. These items are clearly designated on the menu and will be marked with a toothpick flag when served.

Value & Verdict

Despite the gender-neutrality of design, August realistically seems like the urban girls' hangout spot, especially those seeking to work on their health resolution even after gym time. But hey, let's be real. Male body-consciousness is common too, and you don't get ripped from hittin' up Smoking Pug-type joints every day, or even most of the time. There's a clear reason to dine at August, and that's to enjoy a meal without worrying about the blub (and the bank).
