Official description

Palm fronds, good music, and a pink neon sign mark this little open-air oasis in Charoen Krung's industrial Soi 28. Little Market is what happens when the creative minds and laid back personalities of Ce La Vie's former executive chef Chet Adkins, photographer Jason Lang and Speedy Grandma's Thomas Menard join forces. What was once a drab single-room stall has been transformed into a colourful diner with a personality ten times the size of its dimensions. There is so much to describe, from the crazy hand-painted walls and the checkerboard floors to the hot pink bar stools, oversized hanging lightbulbs and a really old school pinball "machine" just sitting there in the back. But even with eyes closed, there's the glorious sounds of Bowie and The Beatles pulling you in.

The Menu

The words "Coffee. Breakfast. Burgers." on the menu will be even more of a green light if you're a morning person. The coffee list has the standard choices of Espresso (B40/55), Cappuccino (B60/75), and Americano (B50/65). Plus, Thai coffee (B60/75) and Cold brew (B80). If you're looking for more of a splash to wake you up, try Little Market's Italian soda (B60), made impressively with homemade syrups. Another pick-me-up here, especially if you're a breakfast-skipper, is the Detox smoothie (B150), where you can taste the difference of fresh berries.

One of the most likeable things about Little Market's food offering though is how much variety is represented in such concise set of options. The five breakfast items, for instance, are each so iconic for the morning meal-time, yet are on completely different ends of the spectrum. If you love an eggs-bacon-and-toast kind of breakfast but also grew up in Thailand, you'll find yourself torn between the big Western platter (B180) and Khao tom (B100) or Kai krata (B100). We decided not to pick sides here and went with the always excusable pancakes. (Muesli was the other option, in case you're wondering).

There's more than meets the eye with Little Market's pancakes (B120). Appearance-wise, they fail the standards of propagandic Japanese hotcakes. However, the pancakes here are real, made-from-scratch buttermilk pancakes, and like the Italian sodas, are flavoured with handcrafted syrup. Forget maple; bale fruit and hibiscus syrup and the fresh pineapple compote are your new jam for pancakes.

But when it comes to Little Market's street cred, locals will talk about the burgers. The Steak burger (B180) is the all-American backyard BBQ staple -- a simple beef patty burger with cheese, mustard, pickles and onions you can't complain about. The Chicken burger (B180) on the other hand makes a compelling argument for fusion, featuring chicken katsu, Chinese cabbage, umami 'slaw, kimchi pickles and gochugaru mayo. The homemade condiments make this everything. Along with the side of tots, salad, or whatever the owners/chefs propose, you'll find yourself filled, even though the burgers here seem smaller than what's hit in town.

The detox.

Insider's Tip

If you do need a bigger burger, the password for an unlisted three-patty beef burger with bacon and thousand island is "Lang" -- the "Lang burger". Also, the burger buns here, though not housemade, are sourced from the legendary Thai bakery, Panlee.

Value and Verdict

Little Market is yet another one of Charoen Krung's hidden gems. We love how easy-going and down-to-earth this daytime diner is. With the owners being there around the clock, personally preparing your food and serving it to you, you'll feel like you're at someone's house on the weekend (even if you're there on a weekday). It's hard to find vibes this authentic so near to the city centre, as well as such affordable prices for food that feels like home. Little Market is simple, but blessed.
