Official description

Cantina Wine Bar & Italian Kitchen graces Ari with its first trattoria, a restaurant serving up true Italian comforts. Managed by Soho Hospitality, the group that has also brought us Havana Social, Charcoal and Above Eleven, it's no wonder the interior of this cozy and casual little Italian spot is so on point. Candle-lit for its evening opening hours, the best date seats are near the windows or against the rustic brick walls. Winos, however, will demand for the tables at the base of the glorious wine cellar in the middle of the restaurant. To reach the top of this bottle library, you'd have to climb the wooden ladder perched against it, or swing from the chandelier from the second floor. We recommend neither. You should just ask the staff, unless the owner of the establishment Matthew Milotich is already grabbing you some of the good stuff. But no matter where you sit in this intimate setting, you've got a view of the wine and of chefs hustling behind the counter. Pizza chefs work in calmer situations up at a baking station on a more private second floor.

The Menu

You've read about Cantina in Guru before, but only about their crafty pizzas. We returned because this well-designed ristorante has much more to offer besides the pie. To begin with, they've got a fine selection of easy-loving bruschetta. Get the Mixed selection option (B290++), so you don't have to commit to only one of the four combos, which are san daniele ham and stracciatella, avo and feta, gorgonzola and beans and truffle and artichoke.

Still in the pre-mains, we decided to opt for the Fennel, orange and alici (B220) over common salads you're surely tired of seeing in reviews. If you're not deeply rooted in Italian cuisine, you'll find this leaf-less toss of fermented anchovies, fresh oranges, fennel, long shallot slices and lemon juice reminiscent of sashimi. It's a salad you'll find yourself eating attentively.

For mains, Cantina tempts steak-lovers with the Florentine T-bone for two (B1,350), the Ribeye (B850) and Lamb chops (B650), all featuring high quality Australian meats. However, we recommend the grilled South African snow fish platter (B790) instead for a lighter and more sophisticated secondi. That way you can make sure to have space for some homemade pasta or some chunky funchi and sausage risotto (B330) and most definitely the lasagne (B280), because it is the absolute bomb here. A secret family recipe personally passed off from the owner's mother "Mamma Maria", all we can reveal is that the lasagne contains both beef and pork for a smoother and sweeter taste. Fall in love.

Though full to the lid at this point, we couldn't make up our damn minds about what homemade dessert we wanted. So, we had all four of them -- tiramisu (B180), panna cotta (B150), ice cream cheesecake (B140) and gelato (B90) -- on one personalised platter, which is possibly now an option on the menu. If it is, know that we started this, guys.

Insider's Tip

The big question Ari constantly poses to hungry drivers headed that way is "is there parking?" Cantina's getting a huge lot on Ari Samphan Soi 2 early next month. Another pro tip we've got is not to miss out on the charms of Cantina's Italian Opera-themed bathroom. Also, if you see Matthew, ask him about his uncle's vineyard and Leonardo Da Vinci.

Value & Verdict

There's a reason Cantina's full name has an additional five words to it. This is a place for serious lovers of Italian food and wine. Make no mistake about it. We see an authentic driving force to source only the best produce and hands for the kitchen, and that's because precious family recipes are at stake. Meanwhile, with a solid wine expert running the ship, you're sure to find the best vintage for your budget, starting at B950. Just whatever you do, don't leave without trying the lasagne! g
