Official description

There are two types of sushi restaurants in Bangkok. Ones where they serve up omakase in a setting so fancy you're probably too scared to let a cough slip out; then the casual ones where you can pretty much rock up in flip-flops ordering salmon rolls stuffed with goose liver, with no one blinking twice. Yuzuki is all about the latter.

For fusion's sake

THE SETTING

Fusion sushi.

Imagine a cosy space seating about 20 people that works as a place for a quick set-lunch as well as an evening izakaya style hangout. The owner is an experienced importer of seafood from Japan (he often hand-carries some of the fish himself) and his focus is to deliver some of the freshest fish to Bangkokians at an affordable price. Thank you for thinking about the rest of us who want to have a decent nigiri without having to sell our own kidneys to afford it.

THE MENU

Hot dishes, edomae sushi, fusion sushi -- you name it, they've got it. We've sampled all of the fusion sushi rolls and we're happy to report back that they all stood out individually, thanks to the different sauces and toppings that have been created solely to match each sushi. Let's start with what really blew us away. The Shimaaji saikyo (B160++) which is made with torched striped mackerel, caviar and sweet teriyaki sauce. The fish was extremely fresh, the meat was not overly fatty -- the match up of sweet and savoury was well-balanced and it was the definition of umami in one bite. Another sushi that really highlighted the quality of the ingredients and the beautiful combination of flavours was the Akami dream (B450++) which was packed with chu toro, uni and quail eggs. Rich and decadent, one order of this will send you straight to sushi heaven.

Traditionalists can opt for the Sashimi-mori (B1,800++), comprised of five kinds of seafood and fish. On our visit, we were served otoro, salmon, botan ebi, hotate and hamachi which were presented beautifully and as expected, the quality was superb.

For those who are looking for hot main dishes, we recommend the Gyu don (B250++) which is a rice bowl topped with thin slices of beef and an egg. The beef was cooked perfectly and wasn't overly fatty either so you can enjoy the dish without feeling too guilty about it. The Tempura moriwase (B390++) is a mixed platter of prawns and vegetable. The batter was lovely and not as overly salty as some of the other places we've tried. These golden babies were delicious!

There's nothing wrong with fusion sushi -- especially when it's done right. Having said that, we know it's not for everyone. So if you're going to order these fancy-looking rolls, do expect a rather filling bite that'll come topped off with indulgent sauces.

INSIDER'S TIP

The sushi head chef has plenty of experience under his belt and has lots of loyal customers that have followed him here. He's an affable character who's up for a good chat, especially when it comes to recommending what fish is in season. Got a special request? Make sure you talk to him as he's bound to get you exactly what you want.

VALUE & VERDICT

Great quality fish at really reasonable prices, this is the place to hit when you're craving fusion-style sushi. We dig the casual-vibe and its understated charm. If you're looking for one of those blow-me-away omakase places though, we'd suggest you look elsewhere. g
