Official description

Sukhumvit Soi 23 is not really a place well-known for good dining options and more for being the location of the infamous Soi Cowboy. Yet, a newly-opened restaurant on the premises is set to change all that. Walking into Papa's Fish 'n Chips is like walking into a rustic, industrial, chill-out place that has a banging adult rock playlist and a centre table that pops out thanks to the blue-white tiles imported all the way from Italy. It's a different atmosphere from what you'll see outside -- bars and street food. And despite having only been opened for about three weeks, Papa's Fish 'n Chips has a menu that blows us all away.

Fish 'n chips 'n delicious to the lips

The Setting: Sukhumvit Soi 23 is not really a place well-known for good dining options and more for being the location of the infamous Soi Cowboy.

The Menu

The menu boasts a wide variety that is able to cater to your whims. Obviously, the crowning glory of this restaurant's spread is the fish 'n chips, but we'll get to that later.

We started off with the Salt and pepper calamari (B265+) -- a dish that isn't as simple as it seems. We've tasted calamari that's over-fried and covered with a thick amount of batter to the extent that it's not even calamari anymore. But fear not, for Papa's Fish 'n Chips cooked its calamari perfectly. The batter wasn't too thick; the calamari didn't taste like fish to the extent that it turned you off and more importantly, the sauce it came with completely elevated the whole dish and made it deliciously addictive.

For a somewhat healthier alternative, we went and tried the Caesar salad (B255). There was a perfect balance of salad and dressing so as not to overpower the taste of freshness when biting into the lettuce. It was topped with buttermilk chicken breast that was ridiculously succulent. There was a smattering of bacon bits all around which look deceivingly small yet gave such an added taste to the whole salad.

One of Papa's best selling dishes is its burgers, with their buns made by baker Maison Jean Philippe. The assortment they have on offer is enticing, some of which have awesome names like the Flying Dutchman and the Chuck Norris. We decided to go for the simple Bacon cheeseburger (B375), and though it was simple, it was definitely formidable. The bun wasn't sweet so as to overpower the burger and the ratio of patty to bun was perfect. That also meant the patty was, well, pretty big. Size doesn't matter (no pun intended) however if the meat is tasteless, as is the case with some burgers. But they've avoided this pitfall by giving customers a sizeable, succulent patty complemented with cheese and really, really crispy bacon.

Heading over to the other side of the pond, we tried its Pie (B395), served with steamed vegetables, a generous helping of mashed potatoes and gravy on the side. Although there was gravy inside the pie already, we all know that there's no such thing as too much gravy. The ratio of the pastry to the beef and gravy was perfect. None of them overpowered the other. Plus, the beef just melted in your mouth. Added bonus: mashed potatoes that were perfect in texture and vegetables that weren't over-steamed.

And now, the moment we've all been waiting for: the Fish 'n chips (B395). It's the pride and glory of the restaurant and the owner has confidently said no one does fish 'n chips right like they do. Once we dug into it, we were very much inclined to agree. First off, it could easily serve three people. It was a sizeable cod with a sizeable portion of chips. And they were legit chips, not measly, thin fries. Secondly, it was served with tartar coleslaw, a pea puree and a choice of either a salad or a buttered bread roll so you can make a chip butty. Much like the calamari, the batter on the fish wasn't thick and was just the right amount of crispy so you get that crunch when you're cutting through it. Protip: get the chip shop curry sauce for an additional B75 with your fish 'n chips. Seriously, it will change your life.

To top it all off, we had the Warm pecan pie (B230) for dessert, a sweet but not overly sweet finish to the feast we just had. It was served with a scoop of ice cream and whipped cream to complement the warmth of the dish.

Insider's Tip

Papa's Fish 'n Chips has got a selection of really great mocktails that go well with whatever you're having. Two of our favourites were the Manao soda (B95) and the Peach iced tea (B120). If you're looking for something a little sweeter, their chocolate milkshake (B150) rocked, too.

The Verdict

For far too long, Bangkokians have been denied proper and delicious fish 'n chips, but that era is now over. With Papa's Fish 'n Chips offering us comfort food -- both English and American -- at a reasonable price, we are very much obliged to run into their doors whenever we're craving.
