Official description

Several months ago an awesome little venue called Roots set up shop in K Village and the place seems to have made an impression on the area as quite the community has now been built around this bar and grill. Crowds gather here regularly, especially during weekends to chillax, eat soul food and listen to good music. The venue is comprised of both an indoor seating area and a large outdoor garden area that has direct access to a children's playground. So, it's kid-friendly and pet-friendly too. Despite the heat, we must admit it's pretty awesome sitting outside. Sip adequately intoxicating drinks and listen to DJs Octave and KC play funky beats while simultaneously watching delicious pizzas and Turkish bread being baked before your very eyes.

THE MENU

So, we're quite impressed with the variety of dishes that are on offer at Roots. You've got vegan and you've got not so vegan; you've got Jamaican -- thanks to the founder's partially Jamaican roots -- and you've got not so Jamaican in the way of Middle Eastern, Thai, American comfort food and Spanish. Basically, it's an international offering that offers anything from goat and oysters to vegan gambas and vegan fish and chips. Everything has its own unique twist, which we absolutely love.

We started with the Salmon and mango tartare (B220); the sweetness of Thai mango does do something quite extraordinary to salmon. This was consumed at lightning speed as it tasted mega fresh. The Hummus with bread (B140) was pretty fiery, with the bread freshly baked by Roots and the hummus having a unique spin on the usual hummus you'll find anywhere in the world; very spicy indeed and there was more of a crunch to it as the hummus was not simply put through a blender, but crushed manually. We could taste the love that went into it. Next up was Vegan fish and chips (B250); now seriously, if you didn't know they were vegan, you wouldn't be able to taste it; these just tasted like some pretty good fish and chips. The tartar sauce was dope too. Now onto the Vegan gambas (B200); these tasted okay, but probably not something we would order again if we're being completely honest. We're super into prawns and the taste simply cannot be substituted or replicated. But, each to their own!

Roots claims to be the only place -- in Thailand -- that serves authentic Jamaican jerk sauce that uses absolutely all the wide variety of chillies that you'd find in real jerk sauce. Apparently, a lot of places are claiming they're using real jerk sauce when they aren't. Well, we don't think there are too many places here that offer goat jerk chops either. If you happen to stumble across one, do let us know. We tried the KC is a jerk - goat jerk chops (B540); something very different, very spicy and -- if you're into goat -- very yummy too. If you're gonna order this, have it inside. It's so spicy and the heat won't help when you're breathing fire. This dish is quite popular at Roots. Then... there were oysters, if you can believe. We tried the Irish premium oysters (B99 per piece) that came with chopped shallots in red wine vinegar. These tasted super fresh and didn't actually really need the extra sauce. We do wonder though how they would have fared with Roots' authentic jerk sauce. Another must-try is the Salmon steak w/ dill sauce (B280). The dill sauce is another one of the owners concoctions, making it a dish we'd order again. And again.

We ended the evening with the magical Chocolate cheesecake (B180). This. Was. Bomb.

INSIDER'S TIP

You should definitely go on a Thursday, Ladies night, because if you're lucky enough to be a lady, you'll get five free sexy house made bevvies that will fly you into an evening of bliss, sadly followed by a morning of www.hangover.com. With the music that's playing, you won't really need to go anywhere else. Also, weekends are really happening at Roots. You probably won't get a seat and may have to resort to bringing your own picnic blanket. No worries if you don't bring one, Roots has a few lying around.

THE VERDICT

We're pretty impressed with Roots and will definitely be going back. Where else in Bangkok can you get such such a wide range of vegan dishes, meats, oysters and pizzas? If you're going with a huge party, we guarantee everyone will be satisfied.
