Quiero La Monita!

Tasty tortillas served in a flash

La Monita Taco Truck is bursting with bold Mexican flavours. Using upscale ingredients, they take a more refined approach to authentic Mexican food. We visited the food truck that's operating on a busy stretch of the ground floor in Siam Paragon.

First up was the Grilled NZ ribeye steak fajitas (B320), served sizzling hot on a cast iron skillet in a silky marinade of onions and green bell peppers. Accompanied on the side were three tortillas, buttery guac and mild salsa. Open up the tortillas yourself and craft them together to make three sizeable fajitas tacos. It was tasty but familiar; the beef reminded us of other spicy BBQ type meats you'd find at a Korean BBQ. If you're really into spicy meat, this dish is for you; but if you want to explore more unique and adventurous Mexican flavours, wander away from the steak.

When you think about tacos, a shrimp filling isn't the first you'd have in mind, but the Tequila shrimp tacos (B275) are good enough to make you reconsider. Every bite was an explosion of cilantro, lime, diced tomatoes and grilled shrimp slathered in the house marinade. It was mild in spice, almost cool at times and so savoury; the shrimp was meaty and fresh and the tortilla was lightly oiled and grilled. We weren't expecting such texture and flavours to be honest. The lime brings out the marinade and the grilled tortilla, taking this dish to the next level.

Our favourite dish was the Baja Gordita (B275). A soft, cheesy and fluffy flour tortilla, oiled and flash fried for a flavourful crunch; this tortilla wowed us, it was good enough to eat alone. But it didn't come alone, but instead was piled high with the house salsa, shredded lettuce, melted cheese and tantalising pepper cream baja sauce. At the core of all of this was a chunky blend of chicken and chorizo which tasted mind-blowing. The fatty Mexican pork sausage had a distinct chilli-like kick. If you are searching for bold and distinct tastes uncommon to this hemisphere, then the Baja Gordita needs to be on your list. The price may seem dear for what looks like a glorified taco, but the Gordita is the Michael Jordan of the tortilla family, so totally justifiable.

La Monita Taco Truck opens daily from 10am-10pm on the ground floor of Siam Paragon. For more info call 092-272-8003 or visit www.fb.com/LaMonitaTruck.
