Official description

Upon entering Nineteens Up, you immediately realise that this is a place that's ripe for a good hangout sesh with your buddies. There's plenty to do, so take your pick: two billiard tables on the left and on the far right there are a selection of board games. Flat screens hang from the ceilings if watching a game is what you and your friends prefer. And last but finally not least is the bar, flanked by the Drinko drinking game made famous on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon. The aesthetics and feel of the whole place gives a fun vibe. We think the colourful psychedelic mural on the wall adorned with wooden doors helps a lot with that. And don't be weirded out by the bathtub that's near the beer taps. At certain times, they actually fill that tub with alcohol. The fun isn't just indoors either. Nineteens Up has got some outdoor spaces for you to chill at, equipped with a ping pong and air hockey table, as well as an outdoor kitchen they're renting out.

But is the food good?

Roasted Mediterranean octopus and white truffle potato velouté.

The Menu

We started off with the Mushroom salad (B220) that admittedly threw us off at first taste. We were surprised by the fact that there was a creamy and cheesy soup base to it which is definitely something we haven't seen in a salad before. However, once we got pass that, we have to admit that the dish was delicious, striking a fine balance between the crunchiness provided by the vegetables and the chewiness provided by the mushrooms.

Nineteens Up also serves up a selection of pasta that you can customise to your liking. Choose either black or white homemade fettuccine and pick your sauce, a choice between bolognese, carbonara and more. We opted for the Garlic chilli with black fettuccine (B250). There was a bit of spiciness to this dish and it's definitely a must-try for those who like their dishes hot. There was also a smattering of crab that gave the dish a crunchiness which went well with the chewiness of the black fettuccine. Apparently, some customers have complained to the chef that the pasta is "raw"; yet when the chef asks for their dishes back, there's nothing to be sent back because they've finished it. Anyway, in our opinion the homemade pasta was a delight.

Heading over to the carnivorous side of the menu, we tried the Pulled beef sandwich (B290), served with a side of french fries. It's the crunchiness of the buttered and toasted bread that really makes this dish work, although once you get to the crust, it may be a little tough to chew. Biting into it, we were surprised to find that it was a tad bit spicy, thanks to the jalapeño peppers, but it was a welcome surprise that we think elevated the dish.

Last but definitely not least, we had the privilege of trying out the BBQ Ribs (B1,199) and we think this is Nineteens Up's crowning glory. The meat, tender and juicy, fell off so easily from the bone and basically melted in our mouths. The BBQ sauce was also just the right amount of sweet and was smothered all over the thick meat. Don't be surprised why the maximum amount they serve is two bones. These things are huge. Be on the lookout for an announcement on a rib eating contest where you'll have to eat six of these bad boys within a set time limit. If you succeed, you get the meal for free.

Insider's Tip

Want to rock out to some good music while having a meal or a drink with your friends? Live bands perform at Nineteens Up from around 7pm except on Sundays and Mondays. A DJ usually takes the responsibility for live music on Wednesdays. Have the guts to perform? They have an open mic every Sunday.

Verdict

Nineteens Up is the perfect place to get some friends together for a night out after work or on the weekend. Aside from all the numerous things you can do from billiards to board games, you can also be rest assured that Nineteens Up has a pretty good menu, so you can definitely come here for more than just some late night drinking. g
