Singha light live series vol 3.1 -- Rhye / Voice space / May 23

Electro-soul band Rhye will play on Wednesday for a night of skilful instrumental arrangements and emotive vocals. Based in Los Angeles, the Canadian/Danish duo started gaining popularity due to their singles Open and The Fall along with their air of mystery surrounding their identity, creatively sensual music videos and distinct falsetto voice. Their 2013 debut album, Woman, was critically acclaimed worldwide. They have since toured extensively in support of their second album, Blood, released in February this year. The show will be supported by My Life As Ali Thomas and Zweed n' Roll.

7pm-12am / Voice Space, Vibhavadi Rangsit Road / http://goo.gl/XHQW2g / Regular tickets at B1,800. Tickets at the door cost B2,000.

+ Jizz-jazz

Singha light live series vol 3.2 -- Mac Demarco / Voice space / Aug 1

The wait is over! The next of Singha Light Live Series of concerts has brought back Canadian singer and multi-instrumentalist Mac DeMarco, whose debut Bangkok show took place in 2013. With his charm and cheekiness, expect a full blast all-night-long from the self-proclaimed Jizz-Jazz persona in a much larger venue this time. At 28, the artist's first two albums, Rock n' Roll Night Club and 2 in 2012, were praised for blending indie-pop melodies with unusual lo-fi tones to create a mash-up of sound fans have come to love. In 2017, his full-length album, This Old Dog showed him transitioning as an artist, having a more synth overtone coupled with a bouncy electronic rhythm.

8pm-midnight / Voice Space, Vibhavadi Rangsit Road / http://goo.gl/ZKrFmA / B1,800.

+ Live like animals

Formed in 2012 in Southend-on-Sea, Essex, the band signed to RCA in 2014 and released their first self-titled album the following year, which went to No.7 on the UK charts, peaked at No.3 on iTunes and was No.1 on the vinyl album charts. The album featured hits such as If I Get High, Trip-Switch, and Wake Up Call. After a series of successful tour and festival shows , they released their second album Broken Machine in September last year.

Mike Shinoda, the co-lead vocalist/rapper for the multi-platinum Grammy Award-winning rock band Linkin Park, will be performing his first live solo performance in Bangkok as part of his "Post Traumatic Tour", which sees him performing in France and Japan. The tour was conceived months after the passing of Linkin Park frontman Chester Bennington, in which Shinoda crafted and released a collection of three deeply personal songs in his Post Traumatic EP this year. The songs will also be a part of his upcoming debut solo album. Although the artist previously took a break from Linkin Park in 2005 to pursue a hip-hop project called Fort Minor, Post Traumatic is the first album that Shinoda has released under his own name.

Art

+ Abandoned but (Kinda) Amazing

Abandonia / Jam Cafe Bangkok / Until Jun 8

This solo photography exhibition by Dax Ward documents abandoned cultural spaces some of which are pretty well-known among urban explorers. Ward, who's originally from the US, has been working and living in Asia since 2003 and some of his works have been published by leading publications such as CNN Style, Daily Mail and Lonely Planet. He captures abandoned but iconic places such as Petch Siam Theatre in Sukhothai, Paris Theatre, Batman Nightclub in Pattaya, Bhirasri Institute of Modern Art in Sathon and, our favourite, New World shopping mall/former fish pond on Samsen. These pictures are beautiful but in a haunting kind of way. The opening party is at 7pm today with music by DJ Vincent Smith.

Tue-Sun 6pm-midnight / Jam, Charoen Rat Soi 1, BTS Surasak Exit 2 / http://fb.com/JAMCAFEBKK, 089-889-8059.

+ Future Masters

7Ongsa Art Thesis Exhibition / H.R.H Princess Sirindhorn Art Gallery / Until May 25

Witness the thesis works by fourth-year students from the Faculty of Painting Sculpture and Graphic Arts at Silpakorn University. You may be looking at the early work of future art masters. If you really can't make it to Nakhon Pathom, we suggest at least checking out some of these thesis works on 7Ongsa Facebook anyway. Some pieces may blow your mind away.

Mon-Sat 9am-4.30pm /  H.R.H Princess Sirindhorn Art Gallery, The Sirindhorn Visual Art Workshop Building, Faculty of Painting Sculpture and Graphic Arts, Silpakorn University, Sanamchandra Palace, Nakhon Pathom / http://fb.com/7ONGSA.

+ Pen Art

Icon amazed / The Meeting Room Art Cafe / Until May 31

After her debut with "Exhiblitz", which took place at five venues in Chiang Mai last year, emerging artist Goy Kankanakul returns with a new solo exhibition entitled "Icon Amazed". She has created beautiful images through an unconventional drawing technique with Fineliner pens on Japanese canvas.

10am-8pm / The Meeting Room Art Cafe, 89 Charoen Rat Road, Muang, Chiang Mai / http://www.cannonballgallery.org.

+ Reinterpreting Fans

Flip the Fan / YELO House / Until May 27

Is talapat, a type of fan Buddhist monks use while chanting, considered sacred or secular tool? Can we reinterpret this type of fan? These are the main questions that are catalysts behind this group exhibition featuring a modern interpretation of said fan by 14 artists. Kontorn "Hongtae" Techolarn, who's a collector of Thai antiques, curates this exhibition and said he wanted to see the fans cool and contemporary. The artist line-up consists of Pod Modern Dog, PUCK, Sahred Toy, Nakrob/moon/mars/nut. We predict a really cool and interesting exhibition with a chance of irking conservative people.

11am-8pm, closes on Tue / YELO House, Soi Kasemsan 1, Rama I / http://fb.com/yelohouse, 098-469-5924.

+ Melting Pot of Styles

Combination Platter / Central Embassy / Until Jun 3

Central Embassy, in collaboration with Galerie Perrotin, presents the first solo exhibit in Bangkok by Japanese artist MADSAKI. "Combination Platter" is a reflection of the artist's own culturally diverse upbringing and a nod to a popular dish in Chinese takeaway menus in the US where he spent most of his youth. His works are distinguished by their graffiti feel and he puts his own spin on art masters (like Picasso), popular Hollywood films and iconic characters from pop culture. If you're a fan, why not check special merch collection the artist made in collab with SIWILAI Store. Following his 2017 solo shows "Bada Bing, Bada Boom" at Galerie Perrotin in Seoul and "Here Today, Gone Tomorrow" at Kaikai Kiki Gallery in Tokyo, his Bangkok debut includes previously unseen pieces, including a 5m totem sculpture and a massive 13m-wide painting.

NETFLIX

+ CARGO

Based on a short film, the movie is set in a world infested by zombies. A father rushes to get his baby daughter to safety, knowing that she needs protection from the monsters that lurk around and soon, from himself, because he's been bitten and it's only a matter of time before he turns. Starring Martin Freeman, the film is streaming now.

+ 13 REASONS WHY (SEASON 2)

Hannah Baker is gone. Her tapes have gone around. The people she's accused of and those around her are suffering and coping from what has happened. But apparently, that's just the beginning. The second season of the controversial show streams now.

+ RIVERDALE (SEASON 2)

Drama, a whole lot of teen angst and a bunch of people taking sides and forming alliances only to jump the fence and backstab other people because they're sleeping with so and so or someone killed so and so while a killer runs loose and so do teenage hormones. That's basically the whole show. New episodes drop every Thursday.

+ THAT 70'S SHOW

Bell-bottomed jeans, perms, and a whole lot of sitting in circles for... deep conversations. Revisit Point Place, Wisconsin and hang out down the street with Eric, Donna, Hyde, Kelso, Jackie, and Fez. All eight seasons streaming now.
