Official description

Bangkok will play host to the international “Raks Siam Oriental” belly dance festival, from Jan 22-25.

Organised by Rumpuree dance studio, Thai belly dance duo Bellysister and Thailand’s belly dance community, the festival will feature five workshops to accommodate participants of various dance backgrounds and levels. They will be conducted by American belly dance master Nourhan Sharif.

The first two workshops will be held at Rumpuree studio’s Asok branch, Jasmine City Bldg, Sukhumvit Soi 23, on Jan 22-23, from 6.30pm to 9pm. The other three, running for two hours each, will take place at the same venue, on Jan 25, from 1pm to 8pm.

There will also be a gala dinner with more than 20 performances, featuring Sharif and 30 other belly dance artists from 10 countries including Hong Kong, Malaysia, Japan, Indonesia and Thailand. It will be held at Hilton Hotel’s Grand Ballroom, Sukhumvit Soi 24, on Jan 24, from 6pm to 10pm.

Sharif has four decades of training and experience in Egyptian, Lebanese, cabaret and folkloric dance. Slated to share the stage with her are Raks Rumpuree, a Bangkok-based professional dance troupe that made it to the semifinals of the third season of Thailand’s Got Talent, and Bellysister.

Also known as Oriental dance or raks sharki (literally “dance of the East”), belly dance is one of the oldest forms of dance. It originated across the Middle East, Asia Minor and Northern Africa and was first introduced in the US in the 1890s.
