Ballet-opera of a warrior queen

After the huge success three years ago, Bangkok Opera will bring the famous ballet-opera, Suriyothai, back to Thailand Cultural Centre, Ratchadaphisek Road, on May 27 at 8pm and May 28-29 at 2pm and 8pm.

Composed and directed by Somtow Sucharitkul, a leading opera composer and distinguished Silapathorn Artist of Thailand, the performance is a revival of his acclaimed masterpiece, which showcases an outpouring of love and respect for the country’s most famous warrior queen.

The production is a fusion of Western narrative ballet — an art form that tells the entire story in dance — and Thai dance drama. Creating a hybrid style of dance that contains elements of modern dance and Thai dance for the production is choreographer Phuwarate Wongatichart, who has worked with Somtow, both in operas and musicals.

Suriyothai is set during a period of Siamese history when Ayutthaya was a major international metropolis and meeting place for world cultures. Major opera star Stacey Tappan will return to sing the heroic queen’s words, and leading international conductor Trisdee na Patalung will once again conduct the Siam Philharmonic Orchestra.

Improvements regarding the scenery as suggested by HSH Prince Chatrichalerm Yugala, who directed the Suriyothai film, have been incorporated into the revival.

Suriyothai premiered in 2013 with five sold-out performances and four additional rounds scheduled a few months later, making it the most widely-attended classical music event in the history of the Thailand Cultural Centre, and probably in Thailand.

Tickets cost 600, 1,000, 2,000 and 3,000 baht and can be purchased from Thai Ticket Major (visit www.thaiticketmajor.com or call 02-262-3456).
