Romantic repertoire of a 'goddess'

Korean flautist Jasmine Choi will join Bangkok Symphony Orchestra and Italian conductor Stefano Miceli during the “BSO Classical Concert No. 3” at Thailand Cultural Centre, Ratchadaphisek Road, on June 16 at 8pm.

The concert will showcase Choi's ground-breaking technique, as she performs her own scintillating adaptation of a staple of the Romantic virtuoso violin repertoire, Introduction And Rondo Capriccioso In A Minor Op 28 by Camille Saint-Saëns.

She will complement pyrotechnics with a perennial favourite of the classical repertoire, Mozart’s joyful Flute Concerto No.2 In D Major KV 314.

Described as the “Goddess of the Flute” by the Korean Times, the 33-year-old international soloist was last year included in Sinfini Magazine’s list of the Top 10 Greatest Flautists in History.

She has made a special commitment to expanding the library of music for solo flute, having transcribed for herself the violin concertos of Mendelssohn and Tchaikovsky.

Orchestras with which she’s played as soloist include the Philadelphia Orchestra, the St Petersburg Philharmonic, the Salzburg Mozarteum and KBS Symphony.

Maestro Miceli will open the concert with Christoph Willibald Gluck’s rousing overture to Orfeo Ed Euridice, and will return after the interval to direct the BSO in Mendelssohn’s Symphony No.4 In A Major Op 90, commonly known as the Italian.

Miceli is currently executive music director at the Bellini Opera Foundation.

He has worked in many of the world’s top venues as pianist and conductor.

Tickets cost 300, 500 and 800 baht (half price for students) and can be purchased from Thai Ticket Major (visit www.thaiticketmajor.com or call 02-262-3456).
