Showcasing Singapore, on screen

Five curated award-winning Singaporean films will be screened, free of charge, during the "Singapore Film Festival 2016" at SF World Cinema@CentralWorld, Ratchadamri Road, from June 16-19.

Organised by the Embassy of the Republic of Singapore, the third edition of the film festival will showcase the arts, history and ethnic and cultural sides of Singapore through five films of various genres — drama, comedy, history, musical.

* 12 Storeys is a drama with three unrelated stories directed by Eric Khoo.

It's a chronicle of the troubled lives of several people living on a large apartment block.

The film won the top award at the 17th Hawaii International Film Festival.

* 881 is a musical-comedy directed by Royston Tan that received a nomination for best make-up and costume design at the 44th Golden Horse Awards. The story revolves around two childhood friends who grew up mesmerised by the glitter and glamour of getai (song stage).

* 1965 is a historical film directed by Randy Ang. It tells of a young Chinese girl who gets abducted, causing racial tensions to escalate and racial distrust to erupt into violence, in the months leading to the separation from Malaysia and the independence of Singapore.

* Long Long Time Ago is an intense drama directed by Jack Neo.

Spanning from 1965 to 2015, the film tells about a heavily pregnant mistress driven out by her husband's family and giving birth to twins.

* 7 Letters is an emotive anthology directed by Singapore's seven most illustrious filmmakers. The seven stories tell of Singapore's people through tales of lost love, identity, intergenerational familial issues, unlikely neighbours and even traditional folklore. Two films will be screened on June 16 and 17 at 6pm and 8.15pm, and four films will be presented on June 18 and 19 starting 2pm. All have Thai and English subtitles. Complimentary tickets can be obtained 30 minutes before each screening on a first-come/first-serve basis.
