Showcase of music and dance

"Bangkok's International Festival of Dance and Music" will return with an eclectic and varied line-up that will keep cultural aficionados completely engaged for six weeks from Sept 8 to Oct 19.

The 18th edition of what is the country's longest cultural showcase will gather world-class artists and performers from 12 countries to give 16 performances in a total of 21 showtimes. All will be performed at the Thailand Cultural Centre on Ratchadaphisek Road.

The festival will kick off with classical ballet productions Swan Lake (Sept 8-9) and Giselle (Sept 11) by Moscow’s Stanislavsky Ballet. Then Aditi Mangaldas Dance Company from India will showcase lively kathak dance in Unchartered Seas (Sept 14).

For opera fans, Helikon Opera Theatre from Moscow will present Un Ballo In Maschera (Sept 18) and Carmen (Sept 20). Then Israel Camerata Orchestra will give a concert under the baton of Avner Biron (Sept 22).

Switzerland's Ballet du Grand Teatre de Geneve will bring to Bangkok Richard Wagner's dramatic Tristan And Isolde (Sept 24) and Carl Off's Carmina Burana (Sept 26).

Audiences will revisit the world's famous soundtrack during the "Hollywood Sound of Cinema" (Sept 27) and be stunned with an acrobatic show by China National Acrobatic Troupe (Sept 30).

The festival will continue with the "Jazz Night" (Oct 3) featuring Shuffle Demons Jazz from Canada and Belgian Saxophone Ensemble, followed by the last two ballet offerings — The Nutcracker — A Christmas Carol (Oct 8-9) by Germany's Karlsruhe Ballet and Romeo And Juliet (Oct 12) by Ballet Preljocaj from France.

After a concert by Turkey's Presidential Symphony Orchestra (Oct 14), Sara Baras Dance Company from Spain will stage its newest production, Voces, Suit Flamenca (Oct 16), a tribute to flamenco.

The festival will close with two sets of performances in two different styles by New York’s legendary dance crew Paul Taylor Dance Company (Oct 18-19).

Showtime is 7.30pm on weekdays and 2.30pm on weekends (except Voces, Suite Flamenca, which will be staged at 6pm on Oct 16).

Ticket prices start from 600 baht and can be purchased from all Thai Ticket Major booths (visit www.thaiticketmajor.com or call 02-262-3191).
