Remembering a massacre, through dance

B-Floor Theatre presents Fundamental, a dance theatre performance that marks the 40th anniversary of the Oct 6 incident, at Bangkok Art and Culture Centre, Pathumwan intersection, from Sept 14 to Oct 2. Showtime is 7.30pm on Wednesday to Saturday and 3pm on Sunday.

Directed by Teerawat Mulvilai, the performance doesn’t mean to tell about what happened on Thammasat University’s campus on Oct 6, 1976 but to reflect the violence and indifference of humans that everyone witnessed on that day.

Also called the Thammasat University massacre, the incident concerned thousands of students from various universities who gathered to protest against the return to Thailand of the former military dictator, Thanom Kittikachorn, who was then ordained as a novice. Many of them were attacked by military and police forces.

However, the show focuses on what happened to the slaughtered young man under a tamarind tree. It casts a dozen young performers whose lives don’t seem to have anything in common with the national tragedy.

B-Floor Theatre will also present two post-performance workshops to promote mutual understanding conducted by experts. The “To Hear And To Heal: Nonviolent communication” workshop will take place on Sept 18 from 4.30-7.30pm. A dance and movement workshop titled “The rage grow and dies in one score” will be held on Sept 25 from 4.30-7pm.

Tickets for the show cost 550 baht (420 baht for students) and there is admission fee to the workshops.
