Celebrating craftsmanship

Akyra Manor, a leading design hotel in Chiang Mai, will present a selection of arts, crafts and creative home decor in a three-in-one exhibition from next month to February next year.

Held to celebrate the heritage of craftsmanship and showcase the thriving artistic community in the Northern Thai city, the exhibition shines a light on three home-grown talents whose paintings, handicrafts and green products for the home were inspired by nature and Buddhism.

Accomplished artist Vichit Chaiwong will display a series of 11 artworks that reflect his interests in the colourful nature of Chiang Mai in different seasons and the Poy Sang Long — the ordination of novice monks by the Shan people of Myanmar and Northern Thailand.

The series also includes four portraits of the "Jewelled Princess" painted using a palette knife technique, and an oil on canvas portraying Phrathat Phusi in Luang Prabang, the twin city of Chiang Mai.

Bua Bhat (meaning sunflower in a Northern Thai dialect) brand is known for its local handmade products that are contemporary in design and eco-friendly by nature. It will feature fun-loving home decorative items inspired by the natural world and the essence of Buddhism.

Premruedee Kullasu, an expert in the art of hand-woven cotton, will offer intricate handmade cotton clothing and home accessories she affectionately named Cotton Farm. The contemporary handicrafts are 100% made in Chiang Mai, from cotton harvested by hand. They are also 100% non-toxic as the colours are all natural — created out of everything from indigo to cumin — and environmentally friendly.

All the artwork and products on display are for sale with proceeds going to their respective creators. Akyra Manor Hotel is on Nimmanhemin Road in Chiang Mai.
