Celebrate the Year of the Rooster

Seacon Bangkae is holding the "Chinatown's Chinese New Year" featuring many interesting activities for Thai-Chinese descendants from tomorrow to Jan 29.

The Center Court and Hall B on the ground floor of the shopping mall will be transformed into Chinatown featuring the charming cultures of the old community of Chinese expats and a recreation of Odeon Roundabout, which is the landmark of Thailand's Chinatown.

This is an opportunity to pay homage to Chinese deities — Tai Sui (the Great Commander of the Year), Cai Shen (the God of Fortune) and Xi Wangmu (the Great Goddess of Lasting Prosperity); shop for lucky charms and indulge in Chinese dishes from 70 vendors; and also have your life in the Year of the Rooster predicted by Chinese fortune tellers of different disciplines.

On every Friday to Sunday, there will be a 30-minute performance of King Rama IX's royal compositions played with Chinese instruments by a troupe from Huachiew Chalermprakiet University's Faculty of Communication Arts, at 2pm and 5.30pm, followed by two one-hour stage performances, at 2.30pm and 6pm.

The first one is Grandfather Under His Majesty's Reign, which tells the story of a man who left mainland China on a boat with just a few belongings to settle down in Siam and made his fortune under the reign of King Rama IX, who kindly provided for Thai and Chinese equally.

Another one is Yaowarat Tycoon And Trump, a comedy about tycoon Chang of Thailand's Chinatown who has a chance to discuss economic issues with US President-elect Donald Trump. The play will bring tears of laughter as performers taunt politics with their wise political verses.

Both plays will also be staged during the "Ni Hao the Year of Rooster" fair at Seacon Square, Srinakarin Road, from Jan 24-29.

There is no admission fee. Seacon Bangkae is on Phetkasem Road.

Call 02-454-7777.
