Crowing early with the Year of the Rooster

Paradise Park invites everyone to start the Year of the Golden Rooster in auspicious fashion at the Paradise Park Chinese New Year: The Great Golden 2017 fair, held from today until Jan 30.

This is an opportunity for Thais of Chinese descent to worship and ask for blessings from Guan Yu, Chinese god of Wealth; Guan Yin, Chinese goddess of Mercy; Chinese sea goddess Mazu (known as Chao Mae Tuptim among Thais); Tiger god; and Lord of Tai Hong Kong Jow Sue. Their statues will be housed at the Royal Park Plaza, first floor, for the full week.

The fair will see a replica of the Jade Rooster Archway, a famous landmark in the Yunnan province of China that is believed to bring good fortune to those who pass through it.

The opening ceremony will take place tomorrow at 1pm with a traditional Chinese drum performance that will begin with the mimicry of the early-morning crowing of a rooster to mark the Chinese New Year. It will be followed by a golden and silver dragon dance.

Exclusively for this Saturday, the first day of the Chinese New Year, there will be three rounds of a special lion dance show featuring a pair of lions performing together. The show will run at 12.30pm, 3.30pm and 5.30pm.

A sculpture of a giant golden rooster will be displayed, and visitors are invited to touch it for good luck. Those who spend 3,000 baht within the shopping centre will also receive a Guan Yin pendant, plus the chance to win a lucky stone bracelet.

Paradise Park is on Srinakarin Road. Call 02-787-1000.
