Artisanal gems from across Thailand

A range of artisanal handicrafts will be presented during the 8th Identity Of Siam at the Fashion Hall and Lifestyle Hall of Siam Paragon, Rama I, from tomorrow to Sunday, 10am-9pm.

Organised by the Support Arts and Crafts International Centre of Thailand (Sacict), this year's event comes with the theme "Untold Legendary Of Handicraft To Today Life's Crafts" and gathers masterpieces by artisans from across the country.

The fair is divided into three major zones. The first zone, called Because Of Love To Citizens, will exhibit the royal duties and visits to all four regions of Thailand to reminisce about the benevolence of King Bhumibol, HM Queen Sirikit and HM King Maha Vajiralongkorn Bodindradebayavarangkun.

The second zone will showcase endangered artisans' crafts at risk of extinction in an exhibition titled "The Revival Of The Forgotten Heritage". The biographies of three masters will be presented alongside their masterpieces and techniques.

They are Kru Sanae Jamjiraruk, an expert on talum (a receptacle usually made of wood and inlaid with mother of pearl), tiab (a tray-like receptacle for food) and phan waenfah (a high tray mostly decorated with mirrors); Kru Wirat Pinsuwan, who is reputed for benjarong painting (Thai porcelain with designs in five colours); and Kru Direk Soiseeda, an expert on Lanna-style repousse metalwork.

The last zone is devoted to the "Sacict: Inheritance Of The Value Of folk Arts And Craft" exhibition, which will introduce the roles of Sacict in promoting Thai handicrafts in the international arena. The knowledge and wisdom of craft masters, artisans and their heirs will also be presented. More than 50 retail shops will offer textiles, batik, metal wares, gold wares, home decorations and apparel; and cultural performances will be staged six times a day, starting at 11am.
