Russian pianist Andrey Gugnin will once again join the Royal Bangkok Symphony Orchestra (RBSO) for an evening of impassioned Romantic period music by Russian composers at Thailand Cultural Centre, Ratchadaphisek Road, on Sunday at 8pm.

Entitled "Andrey Gugnin, Piano", the concert will pay tribute to HRH Princess Galyani Vadhana who during her lifetime supported classical music passionately and took great pleasure in witnessing its steady development throughout the Kingdom.

The first half of the programme will be devoted to Rachmaninoff’s colossal Piano Concerto No.3 In D Minor, Op 30 while the second half will feature Tchaikovsky’s no less imposing Symphony No.4 In F Minor, Op 36.

Rachmaninoff's third piano concert is certainly more challenging for the 30-year-old soloist. Hailed as one of Moscow Philharmonic Society's 21st Century Stars with a string of awards, Gugnin is an amply qualified and experienced exponent of this towering work, which can last a full 45 minutes.

Conducting the RBSO will be Yuri Medianik, another young virtuoso musician from Russia. For his Bangkok debut with the orchestra, he will introduce the concert with Barcarolle In G Minor Op 10 No.3, also by Rachmaninoff, playing solo bayan (a Russian accordion) himself. The multi-instrumentalist has won numerous prestigious competitions on the bayan, as well as grand prize in the Demidov International Violin Competition.

Tickets cost 400, 800, 1,200, 1,600 and 2,000 baht (half price for students) and can be purchased from Thai Ticket Major booths (visit www.thaiticketmajor.com or call 02-262-3456).
