Official description

Hong Kong-based Australian artist John McArthur will exhibit a series of paintings called "Fragments" at Bridge Art Space from this Saturday to Aug 5.

The 15 works on display are inspired by the visual elements of his surroundings while staying in the City of Angels such as graffiti, street art, Chinese opera performances and calligraphy. The artist employs a variety of techniques such as drawing, painting and collage to create layers of lines, shapes and textures through which he shares his story.

The layering of these symbols is an unravelling of different worlds and experiences, some of them Western and some Eastern. He reinterprets these as his own visual narrative, often using the key elements of the face and body.

This is his first solo exhibition in Bangkok. It is a response to the physical and social environment of Asian cities.

A resident of Hong Kong since 1999, McArthur has regularly held solo exhibitions and participated in group shows internationally. His artworks are a combination of drawing, calligraphy and painting. They are included in private collections in Hong Kong, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and the UK.

The opening ceremony is on Friday at 6pm, followed by an artist talk. He will then conduct a live drawing session from 7-9pm and again on July 28 at 7pm. Bridge Art Space is on Charoen Krung Road and is open Wednesday to Monday, 10am-10pm.
