Internationally-renowned ASD expert visits Bangkok to help parents care for affected children TRIA Integrative Wellness and Medical Institute is inviting parents from around the world to share their experiences of how to care for ASD-affected children during the "Integrative Care for Autism Spectrum Disorders Conference 2010" to be held at TRIA, Rama IX Road, on Nov 25-27. Keynote speaker at the conference is Dr Jeff Bradstreet, an internationally-renowned expert in research into and integrative treatment of ASD. Dr Bradstreet has published landmark studies regarding the roles of mercury and the measles virus in autism, and has spoken before Congress and the Institute of Medicine (IOM) of the United States National Academy of Sciences. In 2001, the IOM determined that a link between mercury from thimerosal contained in childhood vaccines and the recent dramatic increase in neurodevelopment disorders is biologically plausible. His 11-year-old son, Matthew, is autistic, and Dr Bradstreet has founded a special school for affected children. During his Bangkok visit, Dr Bradstreet will be giving personal consultations to the parents of 20 ASD-affected children from Nov 24-30. Diagnosis will rely on urine-testing at a laboratory in Paris. Urine samples will be required 15 days prior to the consultation session appointment, and as reservations are limited to just 20 sessions, parents should contact TRIA as early as possible. Dr Bradstreet will also speak at a free-of-charge public seminar and be present at a forum and workshops for parents on Nov 27 at the neighbouring Piyavate Hospital. The forum will focus on "Caring for special children with Autism Spectrum Disorders." There is no known cure and few proven effective biomedical interventions for autism. Complex and increasingly common, ASD is characterised by restrictive and repetitive behaviour and impairments in communication. Sufferers can experience loss of speech, repetitively wring their hands, become hyper-sensitive to sounds, be anxious and prone to aggressive outbursts. Learning delays and weakened immune systems are also apparent in almost every ASD-affected child, and these can worsen without attention. However, recent advances in laboratory methods are providing a greater insight into the underlying processes which generate the symptoms of autism. Dealing effectively with these biological problems is leading to faster and more effective management of ASD in children. While the world has witnessed an apparent increase in diagnoses of the disorders, the reasons for this increase remain unclear, as children are usually diagnosed based solely upon behavioural criteria. The prevalence of autism is estimated to have risen from one in about 2,500 children in the mid-1980s to as common as one in 150 by 2002. Studies have shown that the rise in the prevalence in autism is genuine and not the result of population migration, differences in diagnostic criteria or other potential confounders. However, as studies have shown, ASD occurs four times as frequently in males than females, and reporting the prevalence of ASD in all children significantly underestimates the number of affected males. A reasonable extraction of the overall data when applied to the male population finds that one in 58 are likely affected with ASD, and the prevalence of affected males approaches two percent of the general population in additional studies. With ASD continuing to present complex medical problems for physicians, interventional strategies are being streamlined for many children as a result of advances in biomarker research. Given the large number of affected children and the continued increase in prevalence of the disorder, experts recommend a simplified treatment approach for implementation by primary care providers. "The aim of this conference is to assist the families and care-givers of ASD-afflicted persons, providing them with information on the latest care options and treatments available, as well as opportunities to meet and network with others whose lives are affected by ASD," said Prof Nithi Mahanonda, chairman of the conference organising committee.
