PHITSANULOK: A non-commissioned army officer and his wife, a policewoman, were arrested with 50,000 methamphetamine pills in their possession at a checkpoint in Wat Bot district on Saturday, police said.

Pol Capt Kiatisak Veeravej, a Wat Bot police investigator, said police manning the checkpoint at Ban Mai Ngam in tambon Wat Bot on Highway 11 gave chase to two cars which suspiciously made a sudden U-turn before the checkpoint.

The two cars stopped after being signalled by police.

In the Honda car, driven by Pol Senior Sgt Maj Supranee Sripirom, 45, a policewoman attached to an investigation office of the Provincial Police Region 6, the police found 4,000 meth pills and a .38 pistol.

The police also found another 46,000 meth pills in the Mitsubishi car, driven by her husband Chief Warrant Officer Hathai Choonprawat, 46, an army officer.

The couple were brought to Wat Bot police station for questioning. The army officer will be brought to the military court at Phitsanulok on Monday.

Pol Maj Gen Panu Buranasiri, commander of the investigation office of the Provincial Police Region 6, has been informed of Pol Senior Sgt Maj Supranee's arrest. An order is expected to be issued in two days for her to be dismissed, pending legal action.
