PATTANI: An armoured personnel carrier (APC) crashed into roadside stalls and parked vehicles in Muang district late on Sunday afternoon, killing a man and injuring two other people, and the victims' families are demanding the army driver be tested for alcohol consumption.

The vehicle mounted the footpath near Krue Se mosque and ploughed into stalls and parked motorcycles on Route 42 Pattani-Narathiwat in Moo 3, Ban Krue Se in tambon Tanyong Luloh.

It was reported to have been travelling at high speed.

Hamatsakri Samoh, 35, was hit and killed. He was on a motorcycle with a sidecar. A 17-year-old, Masapaowi Samoh, and a 19-year-old, Nuriyam Taleh, were injured and rushed to Pattani Hospital.

The driver of the APC, Sgt Chayanont Buengrat, of Pattani Task Force, turned himself in to police for questioning. According to police, he and five others in the vehicle were on patrol when the crash occurred.

It was not known if the driver had been charged or not.

The families of the victims are demanding Sgt Chayanont be tested for alcohol consumption.

Pattani Task Force commander Maj Gen Jatuporn Klamphasut said the unit will take full responsibility for the crash.

An initial inquiry suggested the vehicle had a flat tyre and the driver lost control on the slippery road, according to Maj Gen Jatuporn.
