Thailand's Foreign Affairs Ministry and Digital Economy and Society (DE) Ministry is collaborating with Australia to co-host the Asean-Australia Cybersecurity Workshop entitled, "Strengthening Legal Implementation in Tackling Cybersecurity Challenges in the Region" today.
The workshop will help promote cooperation within and beyond Asean to address non-traditional security issues, in line with the Asean chairmanship 2018 theme of "Resilience and Innovation", said Pichet Durongkaveroj, DE minister.
The workshop is a part of Thailand's continued efforts to strengthen cooperation between other Asean member states and dialogue partners in monitoring and tackling cyberthreats, and enhancing coordination between cybersecurity-related agencies. Mr Pichet said emphasising the importance of a safe and stable cyberspace is critical in Asean, in addition to economic growth and development at both national and regional levels because of increasingly sophisticated cyberthreats to the economy, enterprises, corporations and even individuals.
The workshop, with participants from Asean, Australia, and invited speakers from relevant sectors, is aimed at exploring and enhancing Asean member states' capacity in addressing cybersecurity challenges by strengthening the implementation of existing legislations, legal frameworks, and offences related to cybercrimes, and other transnational crimes.
Mr Pichet said the workshop hopes to deepen understanding of each participating country's legal mechanisms related to cybercrimes and facilitate collaboration on criminal justice procedures on the issue.
Participants are encouraged to take part in a tabletop exercise that will simulate an imminent threat to the security and stability of countries in the region.
"The exercise is expected to highlight the need to identify appropriate points of contact at the policy and technical levels to address serious ICT incidents in a timely manner," said the minister, who gave a keynote address together with Tobias Feakin, Australia's cybersecurity ambassador.
Mr Pichet said cybersecurity is a critical issue for Thailand's government, which has been developed by both digital infrastructure and public awareness.
