KHON KAEN: A man who took a bicycle parked in front of a shophouse for a joyride on Sunday night and returned it the following night now finds himself in trouble with the law.

He was caught on a surveillance camera on both nights.

The owner filed a complaint with police on Monday after his bike, parked in front of his mobile phone shophouse in Nam Phong district, vanished on Sunday night.

He gave police video from a surveillance camera showing a thin man stealing his bike around 7pm on Sunday and pedalling off down the road.

The owner later posted a message and a video of the incident on his Facebook account which also showed the thief arriving back on the bike around 10pm on Monday and leaving it where he first found it.

The poster declined to give his name when asked about the incident. He did not now if the man intended to steal his bicycle or just borrowed it to go home.

However, the same man had taken a garbage bin from the front of his shop two days before taking his bicycle. Only the bike was returned.

The owner said he would withdraw the complaint now the man had returned his bike.

But the case does not end there, and police said they will find the man and charge him with theft.

Pol Col Suwat Somjit, superintendent of Nam Phong police station, said an offence was committed and would be pursued as per normal procedure, even though the damaged party wanted to drop charges.

Pol Col Suwat believed the suspect returned the bike because he felt guilty about taking it and the court would reduce the penalty accordingly.

He cited sections 334, 121 and 78 of the Criminal Code to support his remarks.
