NAKHON SI THAMMARAT: A fugitive gunman shot the son-in-law of his younger sister, seriously wounding him, before fleeing after midnight on Sunday in this southern province, police said.

Pol Capt Samphat Phonthavorn, the Thung Yai police deputy chief investigator, said the incident occurred about 30 minutes after midnight at a house in tambon Kurae in Thung Yai district.

An initial police investigation revealed that Ekapol Suanchan, 31, and two friends were taking drugs in the house when Sian Chunak, 60, the gunman, showed up to tell Mr Ekapol to stop using drugs. Mr Ekapol, the son-in-law of Mr Sian's younger sister, reportedly paid no attention to him.

Angered by perceived lack of respect, Mr Sian fired two shots at Mr Ekapol with an 11mm pistol, hitting him once in the rib cage. Mr Ekapol, who was seriously wounded, ran out of the house and hid in a nearby bush. Mr Sian fled.

Mr Ekapol was admitted to Thung Yai Hospital.

The incident prompted police to launch a manhunt for Mr Sian, who was recently released after serving several decades in jail for mulitple murder convictions. After his release, he committed a crime in Surat Thani's Tha Chi district and was already on the run after a warrant was issued for his arrest.
