CHON BURI: A South Korean wanted for alleged fraud in his home country was detained on Monday night at a condominium on Pattaya-Na Kluea Road in Bang Lamung district, Pol Maj Gen Nanthachat Supphamongkol, chief of provincial police, said on Tuesday.

Kim Woong, 38, is the subject of an Interpol red notice, he said.

The local police had been alerted to his presence in Pattaya city, which led to him being arrested on Monday night, said Pol Maj Gen Nanthachat.

The South Korean embassy in Thailand had contacted the Royal Thai Police foreign affairs division after the Interpol red notice was posted on March 4.

Mr Kim is accused of conning a company in South Korea out of the equivalent of about 75 million baht. He allegedly contracted to supply it with 2,200 electronic masks, but had not fulfilled it, Pol Maj Gen Nanthachat.

The suspect had not returned the money and instead fled into Thailand to hide.

Mr Kim had denied all charges when he was detained in Pattaya, Pol Maj Gen Nanthachat said. He faced extradition to South Korea for trial.
