PATHUM THANI: Police seized 20 kilogrammes of "ice" from a car that hit a traffic island in Muang district after a dramatic road chase early Thursday.

Police followed the white Toyota Yaris with red licence plates from a house in tambon Suan Prik Thai on a tip that the people in the car were part of a gang trafficking drugs into Bangkok.

Aware of being followed, suspects in the car tried to escape but the vehicle finally hit the traffic island on Liab Khlong Prem Road in Moo 4 village of tambon Bang Phun at about 4am. Since the car could no longer move, the two men inside it got out and ran away.

Three black bags were left inside the vehicle. They contained 20kg of crystal meth.

Police subsequently went to house No.179/72 of the car's registered owner in Pruksa Ville housing estate in tambon Suan Prik Thai. They met a man and a woman there and, after a search, found two kilogrammes of "ice" hidden in a desk in the house. Both claimed that they knew nothing about the drug and were at the house only to play games.

Pol Col Samran Nuanma, a deputy commander of the Narcotics Suppression Bureau, said the gang trafficked "ice" in Bangkok and stored the drug in Pathum Thani. Police had yet to identify the two suspects who escaped.
