A man fell to his death from the 8th floor of the Bangkok Criminal Court on Monday after it acquitted a man accused of killing his young son in 2016.
The incident happened about 9.30am. The father landed on the lawn at the base of the right wing of the Criminal Court on Ratchadaphisek Road. Court officials quickly covered his battered body with white fabric.
Officials said that the man, in his 40s, appeared very tense after hearing the judgement. He climbed from a passage through a window onto an outside ledge on the eighth floor and jumped off, officials said.
A tearful woman relative told reporters her nephew was murdered in an area under the jurisdiction of the Din Daeng police station two years ago, but there was no surveillance camera recording because it was broken.
Metropolitan police chief Chanthep Sesawet quoted the man's relative as saying he jumped out of sorrow that the Court of First Instance acquitted the defendant of the murder of his son.
Pol Lt Gen Chanthep said he would review the case, which happened before he took office. However, he believed the court fairly based its ruling on witness accounts and other evidence.
He quoted the dead father's wife as saying her husband had dearly hoped the court would deliver punishment.
Plaintiffs had right to take the acquittal judgement to the Appeal and Supreme courts, the Bangkok police chief said.
