NARATHIWAT: A 14-year-old boy was killed by a stray bullet in a gun attack in Rueso district early on Sunday. The man believed to be the actual target was injured, police said.

The attack occurred at 2am at a grocery shop at Village Group 3 in tambon Suwari.

A police investigation revealed that Sathit Kaewnunual, 39, from Yala's Muang district, arrived on a motorcycle and sat down under a shelter in front of the grocery shop. A gunman hiding in the dark fired two shots at him with an M16 rifle.  One of the shots hit Mr Sathit in the body while the other missed him but hit Abdul Asan Baka, 14, who happened to be walking into the grocery shop. Mr Sathit was wounded, but the boy was killed.

Mr Sathit was admitted to Rueso Hospital.

Two empty cartridges of M16 ammunition were recovered from outside the grocery shop.

Pol Col Jaras Semsan, the Rueso police chief, said more witnesses would be called for questioning before a conclusion could be reached regarding the motive of the attack.
