A durian trader was shot dead at a house in Yala's Than To district and a security guard seriously wounded by a gunman in Pattani's Muang district on Sunday night, local authorities said.

In Yala violence,  Suchai Chaisith, 46, was found dead with multiple gunshot wounds to his head and torso at a house in tambon Ban Rae. Three spent 9mm casings were found at the scene.

Suchai was at a house used for durian trading when a gunman on a motorcycle opened fire on him. He was shot in the head, chest and abdomen.

Police said the victim, a resident of Songkhla's Hat Yai district, ran a durian trading business and they were investigating if the shooting was a business conflict or the work of insurgents.

In Pattani, a 61-year-old security guard was rushed to Pattani Hospital after being shot at point blank range by a lone gunman, police said.

Doloh Niloh, who is also a village defence volunteer, was shot twice in the head while waiting to pick up his grandchildren from a night school in tambon Bana.

Police suspected southern insurgents were responsible. Several of the victim's colleagues have also been ambushed in the past.
